Thanks for doing this today Sure, good to talk to you Steve. We are dodging a little severe weather, but man the lightning crashes that are coming Thursday They've been prepping for this thing for a long time now. Can we start with the format? What will this thing look like on Thursday? Sure, it's 90 minutes long on CNN the two candidates who will have to be standing behind lecterns for the entire debate They will not be able to consult with their staff during those two breaks that they will have during the debate The two key features are the fact that when it's not your turn to speak your microphone will be muted The talkover was a big problem in the last debate, but also there will be no audience In the debate hall. So that's going to make things a bit more interesting as well All of this happening at CNN in Atlanta on Thursday night. Yeah, I know audience has to play a part in this thing and is all of this a reaction to The the I mean, I don't even know what you call the last debate that those two did The shouting match. Yeah, well, and look there was also this is the result of some Well, look Donald Trump had gone out and said anywhere anytime and then on X Biden says all right I'll do it Let's go and then they both seem to agree to all the rules in a Twitter fight that had unfolded about six weeks ago So that's how all of this came together in the past few days Donald Trump has maintained a pretty normal schedule Though taking some more meetings with policy advisors in recent days Meanwhile Joe Biden has been scrolled away at Camp David in a much more intense debate prep week So it's interesting to see the two different ways that the men are approaching this We're going to carry it on wood radio on Thursday Just so you know move the Tigers game to ESPN 961 because it's so good for ratings There's there are other reasons for debates, right? I mean, we know the line has been drawn to the sand And if your mind is made up, this isn't going to change anything But is this just for independence or undecideds? Well, it is and I think it's you know, I think both men are trying to show that they they are up to the task You know president Biden of course is 81 Donald Trump just turned 78 Plenty of questions about the current president's stamina and his ability to perform in a debate style setting like this And then you know, Donald Trump tends to wander so whether or not the clock on his responses throws them off his game We'll be interesting as he you know if he brings up toilet water levels and Does he suddenly start to me and her and then look the red lights on and he never really answers the question So look, I have called this the NASCAR race of debates. We're all going to be tuning in just to see them crash So right and you did you navigated that very well Rory O'Neill NBC News radio national correspondent. Thank you - Thank you.
