This is WBZ Boston's news video, redefining local news. 79 degrees in Boston at 4 o'clock. Good afternoon. I'm Ben Parker. Here's what's happening. Yep. Still humid. And Ben some as we start the weekend do have most of the Commonwealth under a flood watch beginning at 5 a.m. tomorrow morning through 8 p.m. in the evening hours lower risk in terms of some flooding issues up to the north along the mass spike and a higher risk as you can see along the south coast to Cape and even the islands on his WBZ TV meteorologist Jason Michael. We are already dealing with a few showers widely scattered, but they're out there mostly south of Boston right now Halifax near Brockton and another batch heading out of Providence and into Massachusetts. So we'll keep our eyes on that and we'll fill you in on traffic and weather together in just a couple of minutes. The Norfolk County district attorney is firing back now as Karen Reed's lawyers have argued charges against their clients should be dropped. Prosecutors filed in opposition this afternoon after a defense motion this week claimed that jurors would have voted unanimously to find Reed not guilty on two of three charges, including murder attorneys say multiple members of the jury came forward and told them as much prosecutors now say their claims lack any legal foundation calling the motion unsubstantiated but sensational. A mistra was declared last week after the jury failed to return a verdict. President Biden back in Michigan today where four years ago he promised to hand the baton to rising Democratic stars. President Biden returns to Michigan today where four years ago he promised to hand the baton to rising Democratic stars. During the 2020 campaign candidate Biden said he was a bridge to the next generation. Four years later many Democrats are urging him to fulfill that promise and end his candidacy. But last night the president said things have changed. The gravity of the situation I inherited. And amid what he calls unprecedented threats from GOP challenger Donald Trump. I've got to finish this job. He met privately last night with top house Democrat Hakeem Jeffries who says he gave the president the full breadth of views from colleagues about the path forward after days of candid talks. Sagar, Magani, Washington meantime Republicans are getting ready for their party's convention this coming week in Milwaukee. State officials are celebrating a big win for a big time infrastructure project. We get the update from WBC's Nicole Davis. The born in Sagamar bridges that take traffic to and from Cape Cod are almost 90 years old and desperately have to be replaced. It is not going to be a cheap project. It's something that's expected to cost more than four and a half billion dollars for both bridges. Officials say they want to start with the Sagamar which has already been deemed obsolete. Now crews are that much closer to getting it going as the feds have announced a $993 million reward to mass dot and the Army Corps of Engineers. The cost for the Sagamar bridge alone is about $2 billion dollars. And officials say this means the feds have agreed to help with $1.72 billion dollars of it with the $700 million set aside in state funding. The Sagamar is all but good to go. Governor Keeley says the award is game changing critical for getting shovels in the ground. She says we have never been closer to rebuilding the Cape Cod bridges than we are right now. Nicole Davis, WBC, Boston's news radio. A bit of icky weather coming our way and I don't just mean that humidity that's made it feel icky. We've got some rain and shower activity off the south right now and we're gonna have some rain and showers pushing through here at least for our Saturday. A flood watch goes into effect at five o'clock tomorrow morning and we will have a shower or thunderstorm overnight especially late tonight with humid conditions and temperatures in the mid 70s. Tomorrow it's mostly cloudy very humid some showers some storms some of them could contain some pretty heavy downpours especially south of the city south coast Cape and islands. Greatest chance of getting those really heavy downpours flooding on streets and poor drainage areas may be at risk as well. Temperatures tomorrow that'll be the only real saving grace here. Only in the low 80s I say only because we're gonna get right back to 90 degrees in many places on Sunday with mostly sunny skies. It will be a little less humid Sunday but humid again on Monday with temperatures in the low to even mid 90s. We'll stay in the low 90s at least through the mid part of next week. It is 79 degrees right now in Boston. It's National French Friday and what better place to go than a restaurant in Brockton that one best fries in the city. WBC Suzanne Sosville did just that. Marcus and Christos Leopopolis are brothers and the chefs at Brockton Beer Company. We knew our food had to live up to the beer and the beer was craft the beer is super high quality so we're like all right everything we have to do from A to Z has to be that same way. They have a few secrets to making really good french fries. The most important is hand cutting the potatoes. Otherwise we double soak we double fry. The soaking process helps pull some of the starch and then it helps you conserve what's left around the outside so when you double fry you get a crispy outside and then a fluffy inside. They didn't want to give away all their secrets. Are you a little concerned? You're giving away your secret? Double soaking? Double frying? No because there's a big thing about ratio of your soaking. It's not just water. For National French Friday a free small fry with orders in Brockton, Suzanne Sosville WBC, Boston's News Radio. A well-known supermarket brand around these parts is set to close a number of stores before the year ends. Stop and Shop says it plans to close 3200 performing stores. Eight of them in Massachusetts. The company says they're the next steps in its plan to position the company for growth and says following the closures they'll continue to have a strong presence across their five-state footprint with more than 350 stores. Associates impacted by locations that close will be offered other opportunities within the company. Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trials put on hold in the middle of testimony. It comes as the defense tries to get that case thrown out. Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial was put on hold while the judge considers a defense motion to dismiss the case over disputed ammunition. I'm going to um reset you for the day. Judge Mary Marlow-Somer sent the jury home after hearing on the issue that was supposed to proceed resumption of the trial, reads more questions and called for further testimony. The defense filed its motion over what it says is ammunition evidence, the prosecution hid from them that made me relate it to the shooting death of cinematographer Helena Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021. I'm Haya Punjwani. You are now in the loop. For news updates throughout the day listen to WVZ News Radio on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Ben Parker WVZ Boston's News Radio.
