>> Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today we ask, are you afraid of success? >> The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. >> We won't name names here, but we've all witnessed this, that person in a lot of times it's this celebrity and they're just on the verge of big success. I mean, massive success. We might have a new website, Mary Lynn. >> Massive success. >> But I mean, the biggest success you can imagine and then they experience the meltdown. >> Wait, isn't that the stock market as well? >> I think so. >> When we see that happen, we wonder what could have caused it? There are very individualized reasons for why this happens, but today we're going to talk about some of the common reasons. >> The first one is this, self-doubt. When I say that, I doubt myself. >> Are you a doubting George? >> I think it might be. Well, the thing is, you're not sure that you can handle this big success. You worry about what it is that you don't know or maybe what you don't have. I don't have the right degree for that one is one of the most common ones, or you start thinking about all the reasons why, even though you're so close to it. There's reasons why you tell yourself that you don't deserve it. >> Another reason is fear of loss. If you become more successful than your friends, your current inner circle, what will they think and are they still going to be my friends? Are they going to be jealous of my success? >> It's amazing, Marilyn, how often that seems to happen that we really worry about what will our friends, how will they respond? >> Yeah, but truth be told, if you've got a friend, a close friend who's so jealous of your success that it gets in the way of your friendship, that's a pretty telling sign right there. >> You've got to think about it, don't you? The next one is fear of embarrassment. Boy, this one goes all the way back. I always hate when people do this, but it goes all the way back to childhood. Really, it's that adolescent fear. >> Why do you hate when people do that? >> I don't know, when you reach a certain age, is it time to just put childhood things behind you? Maybe, I don't know, but we all do it. The things that we learned and the things that we experience as children carry forward very strongly into today's world, and we're afraid we're going to stand out from the group. We're afraid people will see us fail, and because of that, we just decide not to try. >> You put yourself on the schoolyard getting laughed at, right? >> That's exactly it. >> Another common reason, fear of failure. You think that it's better to have never experienced the pinnacle of big success than to have it and lose it. I mean, that's quite a burden to bear. >> Well, and we certainly experience this, and the thing is, all of these result in us talking ourselves out of succeeding big, and we feel more comfortable. We think it's less risky, but we're wrong. >> Coming up, how to conquer your fear of big success? >> Today, we're talking about some common reasons why people are afraid of succeeding big, and now we want to discuss how to overcome this absolutely fatal fear. >> Number one, self-talk is so important, and I've learned this the hard way, I guess you could say, because I'm a first-time entrepreneur, and fear has definitely creeped in upon occasion, and I'll say negative things to myself. >> You just smack fear right in the face. >> Well, actually, thanks to you, I have, because it's been so helpful to have you on board because you've been through this, and you've been really good at helping me understand that, you know, saying negative things and being negative isn't going to help you succeed. You got to turn that around and be positive to make positive things happen. >> Well, I'll tell you, Marilyn, you know, I've experienced this quite a bit. What I know you're going through, I've experienced quite a bit, but even as an experienced business owner, you still, you know, fear still creeps in, and so it's something you constantly have to fight. You know, think about the things that you've done right, the obstacles you've overcome to get where you are now, the things that have already gone your way and keep affirming these things to yourself over and over and over again every time you have some self-doubt. >> Number two, you don't have to get it perfect, you just have to keep going. Think about it, it hasn't been perfect up to this point. >> Boy, it'd be nice of an ad there. >> Right, so why would it be perfect from here on out? Just relax, enjoy the journey, and enjoy the growth that you're experiencing. >> Because I think all of us are familiar with fact, whenever we reach that next level of success, it's great, we celebrate, but the joy really came in all that we learned and how much we grew as we got there. Number three, success comes one level of the time. Sure, you have to keep your eye on that ultimate goal, but you get there one step at a time. You only have to take that next step. You've learned enough to know how to do that, or perhaps more importantly, you absolutely have learned how to find out anything that you don't already know. >> Yep, you got your resources. And number four, surround yourself with people who have made it, speaking of resources, coaches, mentors, people who are once where you are now, but are now where you want to be. They can help you get to that next level and get past any issues or blockades that might pop up. >> So the bottom line here is just don't be afraid to take those little steps that lead to big success. >> We have links to some other shows we've done on overcoming fear, so you can get some more tips.
