Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we'll discuss the art of knowing yourself. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. Most of us are familiar with the movie Pretty Woman. You're very familiar with it because you are a man who loves that chick flick. It helps me get in touch with my feminine side. But you know, Mary Lynn, I wasn't going to admit this publicly. Well, it's out now. Of course, in the movie, Julia Roberts plays Vivian Ward, who's a prostitute who meets Richard Gere, a businessman, which is why I love the movie, by the way. His name is Edward Lewis in the movie, and he takes -- Richard Gere's character takes Julia Roberts to the opera one night. And one of the things he's explaining to her is how at the opera, you either love it immediately, fully experience it, or you may, over time, come to appreciate it. Of course, at the end of the movie, we see Julia Roberts in tears, obviously having loved the play, and Richard Gere just sitting there really experiencing it through her. You really do love that movie. Well, there's a great article over at Psychology Today, and we've got a link to that at BigSuccess.com. And the article shows what your choice in art says about you, and there's four personality types when it comes to design, art, music, film, and literature. And the first type are taste hunters. Taste hunters are open to new forms of art. If you visited their home, they have a very eclectic mix of books, CDs, DVDs, and other types of art. They love discovering new art and influencing others to enjoy that art as well. They're actually more likely to become artists themselves. And the second personality type thrill seekers, and these are the extroverts. They're lively, active social people. They're the ones going to the concerts, dancing at the clubs, going to see that new movie, and they prefer movies with sex and violence, and when it comes to art, they love wild colors. And the third type are the self-medicators. These are somewhat neurotic people. They're very anxious, sensitive, easily upset. Emotional. Emotional, yeah, and they like emotionally turbulent art. They love romantic movies and books. And they use art to regulate their moods and to validate what they're feeling. Then there's the art as decoration crowd. And these people tend to be very conscientious, dependable, focused, task-oriented people. They enjoy order and rules. And so they take a logical approach to art. They'll appreciate a particular musician because of their technical proficiency. When it comes to art, they're looking for art that's aesthetically pleasing. And they also consider the market value of the works that they purchase. Yeah, and so Richard Gere is the perfect example, his character and pretty woman, of someone who loves art as decoration. He used art to relate to other people. He wanted to be seen at an opera, for instance, because that's where the people that he thought were important were. He wanted the best seat in the house, because that's where he could be seen as being important. It was a reflection of him. He's very logical about his choice of art. Doesn't really experience the art, but he still can appreciate its craftsmanship. And Julia Roberts, well, she's definitely the thrill-seeker. Yes. Extremely extroverted, loved, flashy, bold colors and clothing. And at first, it was kind of, you know, it was the trashy clothes. No, it was flashy clothes. But then even when she was wearing the nicer clothes, she looked gorgeous in them. But on the other hand, you know, she's also very emotional. So I would say that she kind of delves into the self-medicators' personality. Well, and I think that's the point, Marylin, is that these types are certainly not mutually exclusive. And in fact, most of us are going to be a combination of types. And coming up how this information can help you relieve some stress. Today we're talking about what your choice in art says about you. And we've talked about four personality types when it comes to consuming art. But we also want to look at how art can help us reduce our stress. The article from Psychology Today cites a study of office workers. One group looked at art and the other didn't. It took five hours for the group that didn't look at art to wind down after work. But the group who looked at art achieved the same stress level in only 40 minutes. Yeah, and that was absolutely shocking to me, Marylin. I mean, from five hours to 40 minutes just by consuming art. It's really amazing that by enjoying something you can reduce your stress so quickly. But you know, art serves another purpose. It also helps us connect with others because by knowing what types of art you like, I get a sense of who you are. So art can help you get in touch with others, but it also helps you get in touch with yourself. That's the challenge for this weekend. Get in touch with yourself, enjoy some good art.
