Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today we'll talk about one more thing to add to your schedule. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. We were at an event recently, and we have a friend who is very, I mean, the stereotypical busy person, right? I mean, there's no grass growing under his feet, as they say. And as he was leaving, he said something that really sparked a lot of thought with us. He said, "Oh, gotta go to another thing." And, like you said, George, we know that he's really busy. He's really into his job, and that his job requires a lot of meetings. But then it got us thinking, "Well, what a great way to politely excuse yourself, even if you don't have another thing to do." Yeah, because that other thing could actually be going home to have dinner, right? It could be. I mean, it could be personal, it could be a meeting with friends, it could be anything. But when you say, "Got another thing," you just kind of assume, "Oh, he's off to another meeting." And it makes a good impression, too, because he's giving you enough detail to put your own impression in your mind of what he's doing, right? But he's not elaborating. And he doesn't need to. Yeah, exactly. Well, and I think that's the interesting thing is we work our schedules. You know, sometimes I think we feel like we have to explain what we're doing to everybody. And obviously, depending on your job, you may have to explain more or less. But this is a great technique to allow you to get away, put that one more thing on your schedule, and it keeps you on schedule. And coming up, we're going to share some more examples. Today, we're talking about something to add to your schedule that'll keep you on schedule. And that is to just say, "I've got one more thing." Well, you know, people will take up your time if you let them. Are you talking to me? No, you're pretty good. Okay, thank you. I think we've all dealt with the boss or the co-worker or the friend who can talk our ears off and just talk away an hour in a blink of an eye. And so this is a nice, polite way to be able to excuse yourself so that you stay on schedule. So if you know you're going to be talking to a talker, you can just let them know somehow politely as the conversation begins. You know what? I've got another appointment at X time, or I've got another thing that I've got to get to. Well, and it occurred to me, Marilyn, that this is just a fantastic way for you to be able to get some personal time into your daily work schedule. Obviously, assuming you have the flexibility in your schedule to do that. But it made me think about how, as a business owner, I used to say, you know, just say, "Oh, I'm off to a lunch meeting." And in many cases, well, okay, in some cases, I was going to have lunch with a friend. But that way I got to spend some time with my friends when otherwise I may not have been able to because I worked a lot. When I was in morning radio, my partner and I would have a morning show meeting. I'm doing the virtual quotes here. There you go. But actually, what we do is go get breakfast. We would talk about the show and we would just get to talk with each other and laugh. And, you know, it's really important when you're working as a team to have good chemistry and to get to know each other. And so we would use that hour of our morning show meeting outside of the station to have our breakfast and then we'd go back to work. Well, sometimes it's funny how just getting away from the office actually helps you be more productive. I mean, you're able to get more done because you don't have the distractions, the phone's not ringing. People aren't walking in. You don't get interrupted by the person serving you. But that disruption is minimal compared to what we sometimes experience in our own offices. And again, by having a meeting, you're giving that impression that you're very busy and that you're very punctual. Well, and I used to have a meeting many afternoons, Mary Lynn, and what I was actually doing was getting away to work out. Because once again, when you're there all the time, you're working constantly, it seems like. And I loved my work. Don't get me wrong. But the only way I could squeeze in a workout was maybe in the middle of the afternoon. And so once again, I just say, "Oh, I got a meeting. I'd run off, have a quick workout, and then get back to the office." Now, we're not recommending that you take off for a whole afternoon because you have a series of meetings. I mean, we're not saying abuse the system here. That sounds pretty good, Mary. I think I have a whole week. You know, week of meetings. Oh, wow. Well, and the thing is, what we're really saying here is, this is a way for you if your schedule allows to integrate some personal time into your business life. And, you know, especially as business owners or executives, we're often there longer than just about anybody else. This gives you some control over your schedule and lets you balance your work and life. You can get a written summary of today's show on our site at Big Success.
