The one thing most of us are missing out on, according to a Consumer Reports study. Find a written summary of today's show, along with a link to the study at BIGGSUCCESS.COM.
Welcome to The Big Success Show! Today, we'll look at what we're sacrificing to achieve work-life balance. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn According to a recent survey by Consumer Reports, almost 70 million of us don't get enough of this thing. And we spend about 16 billion dollars a year trying to get more. And 50% of us didn't get enough of it yesterday. And no, this is not a Viagra commercial. Viva Viagra! Now it's going to be in your head. What we are talking about is... Hey, wake up, Mary Lynn. Oh, sleep. All right. We don't get enough sleep. I guess here's the good news. If you fall asleep while listening to the show, maybe we've done a good thing today, right? Whatever we do to help. I mean, usually when people fall asleep, we're offended. But today, maybe it's good. I got to tell you, though, I completely relate to this. I am such an insomniac, and it's like, I'm tired, I'm ready to go to bed, and then my mind wakes up for whatever every single stinking night. I've tried melatonin. A friend of mine recommended that. I've never met Mel. It's not... It's supposed to help you. You're supposed to take it about an hour before you go to bed. It didn't work. And if I took too much of it, then I was way too groggy in the morning. I remember those days. I have a CD with waves crashing onto the beach. Lovely. Love that. That'll help, but not consistently. I just... I'm an insomniac. Well, the thing is what a lot of us are sacrificing to achieve work-life balance is sleep. Right. That's the one thing we feel we can push back, and I have to say, Mary Lynn, for some reason, I spend all day trying to get my brain turned on, and then when it's time to go to bed, I can't get it shut down. I think about work, and I just can't stop thinking about all the things I need to do tomorrow. Yeah, well, in the Consumer Reports survey, they say that racing mind syndrome is a big one when it comes to why people can't sleep. I thought you were going to say it was a sign of insanity or something. Well, kind of. Well, I tell you, one of the things I do to fall asleep, that everything you read tells you it's the wrong thing to do, but it seems like if I can tune into television and just kind of start letting my mind drift away from business onto something silly, I can finally fall asleep. Reruns of Sanford and Son, huh? Coming up, six things you don't want to do if you want to get some sleep. Today we're talking about the one thing that most of us are missing out on, and it turns out that we're giving up sleep in order to help us do all the things we want to do at work and at home. Now we want to talk about the top six things not to do if you want to get a good night's sleep. Number six, turn your bed into your home office, you know, like on tell on the movies or television when you'll see people like typing on their laptop in bed. Number five, be the guitar hero jam out, get yourself all revved up. That's right. So the guitar hero. Yeah, I think I'd rather be the jukebox hero the way I play guitar hero and keep anybody awake. Oh my gosh. Number four, chug a red bull right before you turn out the lights that'll do the trick and number three, since variety is the spice of life, mix it up and never go to bed at the same time. Hey, speaking of spice, number two, have a big old bowl of super spicy chili with beans. Oh, that'll keep me awake for more reasons than we want to talk about here. Keep the whole house awake that way, huh? And the number one thing you don't want to do if you want to get a good night's sleep, wear pajamas that fit as tight as an aging rock and roll star's leather pants and get up and play guitar hero. We actually have a link to the Consumer Reports study with some actual solutions for sleep deprivation. These weren't solutions? No. Okay.
