>> Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we'll share tips on how to get noticed in Job Market 2.0. >> The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. >> Today on The Big Success Show, we welcome Phil Rosenberg. Phil is the founder of Recurrear, a career coaching service that helps today's job searcher, get past the number one challenge in the competitive jobs market to get noticed. Welcome to The Big Success Show, Phil. >> Thanks for having me. >> You've got this great site called Recurrear.com. What does Recurrear mean? >> Recurrear means someone to either seeking a job change, or trying to revitalize their career, someone who's between jobs, who's looking to be able to find, is looking for help on how job markets have changed recently in the last say eight years. >> Well, so Phil, how has the job market changed in the last eight years or so? >> Well, eight years ago, the majority of resumes used to be delivered on paper. Around 2000 was a watershed year, where most resumes, the majority of resumes became delivered digitally. That's the biggest change. >> How does that change the resume itself? >> Completely. The paper-based resume had to be a static resume. The only way to customize it was via a cover letter. A digital resume can be searched for keywords. It also greatly increased the number of resumes that went into most companies. Increasing as many as 10-fold, because it's easy to press send from monster or career builder. >> We always hear about search engine optimization for websites, how you want to rank at the top of the pages for Google. But apparently, you can do the same for your resume. Your resume can be optimized. >> You bet, and it's especially critical in today's world. If you think that most major employers get now thousands of resumes for each job, they only staff to look at 20-30, that's 2-3 percent. Your goal in submitting a resume today is getting to the top 2-3 percent. Through resume search optimization, you can manage that process rather than having it be random. My strategy with my client is to make a resume a single-use document, to have it infinitely customizable so that you're gaming the search engine and forcing a higher ranking and higher up the search page. >> All right, so you got noticed, you landed the interview. Coming up, Phil tells you how to make a great impression in the first 30 seconds. >> Today, we're talking with Phil Rosenberg of Recurrear.com, and we've discussed resumes and getting the interview. And now, Phil, tell us how we can make a good impression right up front. >> There's been research from a University of Toledo and Stanford University that state that interview decisions are made within the first two to 30 seconds. >> That's me away. >> Yeah, that's not much time. >> I'm glad Mary Lynn gave me more time than that, Joe. >> They said that the rest of the interview was just somebody justifying their initial decision. So I started thinking, started trying to find ways that someone can make enough of an impact to affect someone's gut feel. Because at that point, in two to 30 seconds, this is a gut feel decision. This is maybe even before you shake hands. And what I advise my clients is it's all through preparation. Learn about your client. Learn about how they communicate verbally and non-verbally. What do they dress like? What do they look like? Go to places where they, I mean, if you really want a job, go to a place where it's close to where their office is and sit there during lunch. Talk to people who are from that company who are getting lunch there. Go on a Friday night to a nice bar that's close to the office and talk to people who are there from that company at happy hour. But when you talk to them, find out what are their body movements like? What is their non-verbal communication like? What's the tone that they use? What's the speed that they use to talk? Boy, that's an in-depth research. Sure. But even more so, you can even do that with the written communication that a company has. Most large companies have lots of it. Their website, annual reports, press releases. Look at the tone that they use. Look at the jargon they use. The key to all this is communicating to your audience that it seems like you already work there. That's interesting. It reminds me of there was that great series coming from the small business world. There's that great series, the Gorilla Marketing Series and Gorilla Selling. And it's very similar to that kind of thing about learning about, in that case, your customer. But in this case, the employer that you're going after, getting as much information as you can, wherever you can. And it's amazing how much information you can gather. Sure. I mean, and that's also an effective way to use LinkedIn or Facebook. Because you've got your own personal networking, because you've got contacts, chances are within that company. A lot of people will only use those contacts just to try and see what jobs are available and to ask if you can pass the resume along. But they leave out some of the greatest uses of a network in talking to people within an organization to find out what the organization is like and what the communication style is like. Listening for how they answer questions rather than necessarily what they're saying. This is fantastic advice. It's kind of, I mean, because you want to fit in, so it's all about mimicking. You know, I've read about when you're at an interview, should you sit up straight and lean forward? Or should you try to have your body language be similar to the body language of the interviewer? And you're supposed to try and mimic that person. Sure. There's a term quote. It's called mirroring. And that's exactly what you're doing. What you're trying to do is show that you fit in, that you get, do you speak the same language that they do? You're really trying to act like you already work with the company. It takes a ton of preparation. And a lot of people aren't willing to put that preparation in, but the people who do get a huge, almost an unfair advantage. Very interesting. It gives you the edge. And so now, Phil, your website is rekereared.com. But most of the information that you'll get, I give up free daily job tips, a blog that's a little bit different. Okay. rekereared.blogspot.com.
