3 questions to ask yourself before scheduling your next vacation. Read our show summary at biggsuccess.com.
Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we'll discuss three questions to ask yourself before scheduling your next vacation. "The Big Success Show" with George and Mary Lynn. We don't have our own daily patterns, and I think I tend to probably get going a little earlier than you do, Mary Lynn. There's no thinking about it, George, you definitely do. Okay, I was playing it soft there. But I can stay up later than you. That's true. So, I'm a night owl, and you're an early bird. Hey, that means I get the worm. Well, you can keep it. Okay, great. Well, I think a lot of us have a fairly good grasp of our daily patterns. They're just part of our routine, right? But the bigger challenge is understanding your patterns for refreshing yourself, for getting away and recharging. And with vacation season upon us, this is a particularly good thing to talk about. Now, what we're going to talk about today depends on your flexibility at work. Hey, speaking of work, Mary Lynn, you know the kind of work my dad, or the kind of job dad said he always wanted. What was that? He said he was looking for a job that had two paid vacations a year, six months each. I'm in, I'll take that. Well, since most of us can't have that, here's three questions to consider when you are planning time off. First, do you need a long break or a series of shorter ones? Some people are so stressed by the time they take a break that a short one just won't do. They never get past the stress so they can relax and enjoy their time off. If that describes you, take a long vacation. Mary Lynn, I have a friend who, that's exactly what she said. She said her first week of vacation, she was still so wound up that she didn't enjoy that week at all. And finally, as she got to her second week, she actually started enjoying her time off. That makes sense. I also have a friend who gets really stressed out being away too long. That happens too. You know, because they almost feel like they're getting punished going in because it takes so much preparation to be away for a while. Right. And then you get hammered when you come back because you've got so much catch up today. I thought you got hammered on vacation. Well, because you're dreading coming back, right? So if that's the case for you, then maybe it's best to consider taking a series of long weekends. And I think there's probably more of a trend towards the second one, the shorter vacations and maybe more of them. Now our second question is this, do you need a day or two to get back in the swing of things after a break? It's the old, I need a vacation to recover from my vacation syndrome. Some people need time to phase in and if you're one of these people, plan your vacation so that you get an extra day or two to unwind from unwinding. And if that's not possible, try to schedule your daily routine a little lighter for your first day or two back in the real world. You know, some people get back from vacation, whether long or short, and they're able to just immediately jump right into that daily life again. If that's you, fantastic. You can max out your days, whatever destination you chose. I can't even do that after a weekend. Alright, our third question, are there certain times of the year when you really need some time off? Because some people have really busy seasons with their business. Like January, February, March, April, May, I'm just saying the times of the year when I really need time off. I was trying to figure out what you were a bitnap and now I know. Well, if you have very busy seasons in your business, a break immediately after that season is often the best medicine and it'll help you push through because you know some needed time off is on the horizon. Like every CPA I know, who immediately after April 15th is gone, right? Out of here. And another example is people who live in areas where the winter months are cold, long and dreary. Yeah, kind of like where we are here in Illinois. You know, knowing that some time away in the sun is just the prescription to cure their winter blues. And coming up, are top five signs that you need a vacation. Today we're talking about scheduling your time off based on your patterns and we've given you three questions to ask to figure out the best way for you to recharge. One of my favorite quotes about vacations is vacation is what you take when you can't take what you've been taking any longer. So here are the top five signs that you need a vacation. One of my favorite quotes, by the way, is vacation all I ever wanted. All right. Go, go. Well, sign number five is the last time your phone rang at your desk, you picked up your stapler and started talking. I think you did that the other day. Oh, well, at least you didn't staple yourself. Yeah, I did that with my phone. Number four, you're secretly hoping to get sick. So you can take a day off by the way I'm calling in tomorrow. All right. Number three, you've been at the airport so much lately that security is greeting you by your first name. Number two, you had to call your spouse and ask for directions home and the number one sign that you need a vacation. When you look in the mirror, you realize that you actually look like your passport photo. Oh, no, you can get a written summary of today's show on our blog at big success.
