- Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we'll discuss how to set yourself apart by keeping this promise. - The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. - Have you ever had a service company tell you that they would give you a call before they showed up to provide you service and then not follow through on that? - Have you ever had a coworker promise they would get information to you but then drop the ball? - Have you ever asked a salesperson to get back to you on a proposal but then they never did? - What was your impression of that company, coworker or that salesperson when they didn't follow through? Bet it wasn't favorable. - No, I'd say not. - I can tell you, I know I've got examples of each of these and it didn't make me happy but I guess what really happens is that you realize you can't rely on that person to do what they said they do. - And so follow through is an essential element to building your personal brand. And you know, a brand is really all about promises and every time a promise is not delivered, your brand suffers. - Right, because you lose that trust factor. - That's right. - Promises are very easy to make but not as easy to keep and if you wanna build that trust, you have to make good on those promises. - As the old saying says, does that make sense? The old saying says? - Or goes. - Goes, say what you'll do then do what you say. This separates people who achieve big things from people who don't and even if it's just the smallest thing you'll leave an impression with someone when you follow through. - Now we often have the best of intentions but it's impossible to judge someone on their intentions. - Oh but I'd like for you to judge me on my intentions very late. (both laugh) - All I can do George is base my opinion on you and anyone else on what you deliver and if you deliver on your promises. - Well that's why on a related note, we have to be careful not to over promise. If we're going to surprise someone, we should surprise them in a good way by doing more than we say we'll do and not disappoint them by doing less or perhaps not doing it at all. - Right and coming up our big action item to improve follow through. - Today we're talking about follow through and Mary Lynn, I remember this one time when I was out and- - Hang on George, we've already given examples. We promise that we were going to give our big action item so let's follow through with that, okay? - Yeah sorry about that, I got distracted for just a second there and hey you know what? - That's another reason we don't follow through right? We get distracted. - That's a good point. - Fortunately there's a simple way around it and it's our big action item today. - Develop a system to record each and every one of your promises. Whatever that system may be, maybe it's the old fashioned scheduler where you write it down. - Ah, pen and paper. - Right or it's some kind of a calendar in your email program. - Well and I like Jot, it's just amazing, you know. Even when I'm out driving around, not that I talk on my cellphone when I'm driving, but with Jot you just call up when you've got something that you need to remember or a promise you need to keep. Just call up Jot, it sends me an email or text message reminder and that coupled with my personal calendar keeps me on track. - And that's Jot J-O-T-T and what's really cool about it, it's free. - Fantastic. - And if you'd like to check it out, we've got a link to it on our blog today at bigsuccess.com and there's two keys to making our big action plan work. All right, first allow time after every conversation to write down or record anything that you promised. - And I don't think that can be overemphasized, Marilyn, 'cause that's really the key is just planning some time for that little thing, but it makes a huge difference and the second thing is then if you make that a habit, really focus on this every day for the next two weeks, you'll find that keeping your promises is easier than you ever imagined. - Speaking of follow through, George. - Yes. - Last week, I thought you said you were gonna pick up the dry cleaning. - Uh oh. - And it would be really nice if you would follow through on that promise this week. - All right, thanks, Mary Lynn, for reminding me and see everyone. That's my follow through system, it's called Mary Lynn. - I'm your personal jot, huh? - Yeah, except it's more like a jolt. - Jolt right in the seat of your pants. - That's right. - You can get a written summary of our show today on bigsuccess.com and leave a comment. - Next time, we'll talk about why we need your help and it doesn't have anything to do with dry cleaning. - Until then, here's to your big success. - The big success show at B-I-G-G Success.com.
