- Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we share some dad-meration, things we admire about our dads. - The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. - Dad-meration, how Mary Lynn? - We came up with a new word, I like it. - Well of course, this Sunday is Father's Day and my dad passed away a number of years ago, but I still remember him every Father's Day. - You know what they say, George? Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad. - That's right. - And I'm lucky because I still have my dad, although I don't get to see him very much because he lives across the country. (laughing) - Well so today we thought we'd share three things we admire about our dads, dad-merations. - Well I admired how my dad loved my mom and toward the end of her life, mom was very sick. But dad would go to work, drive to the hospital, which was 45 minutes away from their home, then go home and get ready to go back to work. - So, but even when she wasn't sick, dad was always there for her. - Well and along those same lines, Mary Lynn, I remember sitting with my dad in mom and dad's living room and the rest of the family was dispersed throughout the house and dad had that cat that got the mouse grin on his face and I remember him saying I just love it when the whole family is together. - And how many siblings do you have? - I have three sisters and I just admired my dad for how much he loved his family and family time. My dad respects everyone and is respected in return. He worked for the Department of Corrections, starting out as a prison guard and working his way up to captain before he retired and dad was respected by his coworkers. He was also respected by the prisoners and many times over the course of his career, when there was an issue with an inmate, my dad was the one they called in because he could calm the situation down. - And I admired my dad for the pride he took in his workmanship. Now, dad was a bricklayer and when I was in high school, I worked for him in the summers. And I remember one day that by noon, we were almost finished with his job and dad decided we'd take a little lunch break. When we came back, dad spotted this brick that he said was upside down, which I didn't even know you could lay a brick upside down. - Did you do it? - I didn't, but you know it was the second brick he had laid that morning. Next thing I know, dad's ripping out all the work from this morning and starting all over. But needless to say, we didn't get done early that night. - I bet not. My dad is very encouraging, but also very willing to let me make my own mistakes. And I remember one time I was hanging out with a crowd. It wasn't exactly a group of high achievers. Just put it at that. - I can say that, Mary Lynn. - And finally I realized that I needed to move on from this group and I was discussing it with my dad and he told me it was very proud of my decision and said, you know, Mary Lynn, you can't fly like an eagle if you're hanging with turkeys. Cause that way your dad always says, hey, turkey to me. - How George, he calls you turkey son. - No. (laughing) - Novel, novel. I admired how my dad gave everything he had to everything he did. And he expected the same thing of me. And one day, Mary Lynn, I remember he was pitching to me. We were playing baseball and he got frustrated because I wasn't hitting the ball like he knew I could. And so he said, swing like you mean it, son. Well, on his next pitch, I did exactly what dad asked. I hit the ball and rocketed right back at him. Hit him on his shin and literally wiped his feet out from under him. - Oh, no. - Now, as he got up, he looked at me and said, now that's what I'm talking about. - Oh, shit. (laughing) Tough guy. All right, coming up, George is gonna tell the story about a breakfast with his dad that you'll never forget. - Today we're talking about dads and what we admired about ours. - Badmuration, we call it. And George, you're gonna tell us about a special breakfast you had with your dad. - Yeah, one Monday morning, I walked into my office at about 7.30 and we were coming off our busiest time of the year. And I'd been away from the office a lot. So I was excited to be back in the office getting caught up. Well, just so happened, my dad, as he was prone to do, dropped by, unexpected. And he told me that he had a meeting at nine and asked if I'd like to grab some breakfast. So I did what I thought I should do. I turned him down and said, "Dad, I think I better pass." I mean, he understood. I had a lot of work to catch up on. He said fine and asked then if he could use my cop here and I said, sure. And so went back to work. But Maryland, there was this little voice in my head that just kept saying, I kept fighting it, but it just kept saying, why in the world can't you take the time to go have breakfast with your dad? So I went up to the cop room and said, hey, dad, you know what? If you're still got the time, I'll take you up on that breakfast offer. Well, it made him quite happy. We went out for breakfast. Can't say that I couldn't remember a thing about the breakfast, the conversation or anything. But here's what I do remember. That was the last time I ever saw my dad before he passed away. Oh man, that is an amazing story. And you know, it really just shows that we need to take advantage of the opportunities to spend time with the ones that we love. I bet you're so thrilled you made that decision. I don't know how I would feel if I didn't, to be honest. You know, what we'd like to know now is what do you admire about your dad? Share your dad morrations with us on our blog today. That's also where we have a written summary of today's show. It's at Big Success that's Big with 2G's Success.com.
