How one young man made a bigg difference at work. Read our show summary at biggsuccess.com.
Welcome to The Big Success Show. Today, we'll share how one young man made a difference at work by adding his personal touch. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. Sometimes we forget what an impact we can make in the lives of others with our jobs. No matter what that job may be. Barbara Glans wrote a wonderful book called, "Care Packages for the Workplace." Dozens of little things you can do to regenerate spirit at work. And in the book, she tells a story about a person who attended one of her workshops about putting your own personal mark on your work. The story is about Johnny, who was a bagger at a grocery store, and Johnny took Barbara's point to heart. And here's what Johnny did. Johnny had an idea for putting his stamp on customer service. He would come up with a thought every day and put it in every customer's grocery bag. He went home that night and asked his dad to teach him how to use the computer. You see, Johnny has Down syndrome, so his dad helped him develop a three-column by three-row page. When he gets home from work each night, Johnny finds a thought for the next day. Sometimes he can't find a good one, so he makes one up. With his dad's help, he types it into the computer. Then they copy it into the other eight sections of the page and print it out. Johnny cuts up the nine thoughts and then personally signs the back of each one. Now coming up, find out the results of Johnny's thoughts. Today we're talking about a bagger at a grocery store named Johnny. And he wanted to leave his own personal signature on his work. So each day he comes up with a thought that he personally signs and places in the bags of each of his customers. Here's what happened as a result of Johnny's big thoughts. Well the store manager noticed that Johnny's thoughts were in huge demand. And he first noticed this when he was walking through the store one day and there was this huge long line. So he's immediately calling for more lanes to be open. But the thing is, the customers didn't move. They wanted to be in Johnny's lane, so they got his thought for the day. One customer told the store manager that she used to only shop in his store once a week. Now she only shops in his store because she wants Johnny's thought for the day. His thoughts have become so popular that he personally signs at least 1,800 of these every single day. Johnny's thought has turned shopping into an experience for his customers. And probably giving him some hand cramps here. Other employees also noticed what Johnny was doing. The people in the floral department started thinking about how they could put their mark on customer service. Now when a flower breaks off or isn't going to be sold, they don't just throw it away like they used to. They find an elderly woman or young girl and personally pin it on her. One of the meat packers loves Snoopy. And I'm not talking Snoopy Doggy Doggy. He bought 50,000 Snoopy stickers, which he puts on every piece of meat he packs. Johnny's thought has made work fun for his coworkers. So Johnny shows us that every single one of us has the ability to make a significant difference in the world, no matter what our job is. And we applaud Johnny and his big success. You can find a written summary of today's show on our blog at Big Success that's bigwith2gsuccess.com. It's also where we have a link to the book that we mentioned earlier by Barbara Glams. And we'd like to hear from you. What do you do to add your personal touch at work? Leave us a comment. And let's get our big quote for the day, George. Our big quote today comes from William James. And I love this quote, Mary Lynn. It's simple to the point. Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. Darn right. Sometimes a simple thought put into action creates a chain reaction. Next time we'll answer a question from one of our audience about how to establish credit for the first time. Until then, here's to your big success. The Big Success Show at B-I-G-G Success.com [MUSIC]
