Welcome to The Big Success Show! Today we'll talk about what you can do when you have more potential than your job offers. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. Today we're responding to a question from one of our listeners and he wants to know how to escape from a dead-end job. He had an email from Gary and he graduated from college a few years ago with a liberal arts degree and he planned to go to law school but by the time he got done with college he was already me high and in student debt so he decided to try to find work in his field but he couldn't. He's still working his pizza delivery job from college he feels trapped he's applied for a number of jobs but they all tell him he doesn't have the right experience he's not qualified so he's looking for a big solution for his big challenge. "Hey Gary that is a tough spot but here's the thing keep your chin up you still have all that potential you knew you had and we have three suggestions perhaps you've already considered them but we're going to throw them out anyway because sometimes hearing someone else say what you're thinking helps you solidify your decision." So the first thing is there is a silver lining in all of this because obviously Gary you don't find your current job challenging. The good news is when you leave your job you're done you don't have to take that work home with you. "Yeah and so we have two questions for you Gary is there something that you're passionate about and does that offer any opportunities to start something part time." When I was young I wanted to get into radio full time as a DJ but I didn't have the experience that it required the skills to go along with it. I was working as a waitress full time and I got my foot in the door at a local radio station and volunteered my time so on my off time I was there learning things and working so that I could learn things. I wasn't getting paid but I was investing in my future. "Yeah and Marilyn we all know it paid off because obviously you worked in radio for quite a few years. How long did it actually take to get that full time job?" "I worked about a year free." "Well it's interesting you should say that because P. Diddy no no P. D." "I think he's Sean Combs now." "Sean John or..." "Puff Daddy right I mean you know he's about like Prince he keeps changing his name but you know he's an awesome guy got a great story well when he was a kid he wanted to be in the music business and so he went to New York and a lot of people don't know this he volunteered to be the janitor just so he could get exposed to that business and you know the the industry was growing fast his company was growing fast hip hop was hot you know and they really needed bodies." "Yeah the company knew him they were comfortable with him they knew his passion they knew that he had a good ear for talent he had proven himself so a door opened for him." "Yeah and about a year he got a promotion and he actually got promoted because they needed people so badly he got promoted to the vice president of marketing and as Paul Harvey would say we all know the rest of the story." "That's right so you just have to get your foot in the door now another thing to consider Gary could you start your own business part-time a lots of businesses names we all know like Dell Microsoft Apple they were all started part-time "You know and that reminds me of the way I got started I had a commission sales job and it did require that I bring work home but I made sure that I got any work that I needed to get done that night I'd get it done before dinner and then after dinner I had all the time for the rest of the evening to devote to my own business and I started a company that printed t-shirts and other promotional products." "So start to finish how long did it take before that business allowed you to go full-time." "Well I'd say it was about two years before I went full-time interestingly enough though it wasn't in that business it actually turned into a different business I started a retail store and so Gary look for something you're passionate about where there are opportunities now and try to get started part-time whether that's a job or your own business." "Coming up one more suggestion although we'll warn you Gary you might wind up going to court." "Today we're helping out Gary who's in a dead-end job and he wants to escape it and Gary you mentioned at one time you'd consider going to law school but because of all the debt you had as a student you decided not to do that well here's something to think about lawyers make really good money and the odds are high that you're going to be able to pay it off so go ahead if that's what you want to do still we'd say go back to law school." "Right and it doesn't have to be law school maybe it's something you're passionate about that offers opportunities now and in the future I mean George you went back to school while you were running your business." "Yeah you know I often hate to admit this but I dropped out of college started my own business in fact by the time I went back I had three businesses going but I just found myself just always regretting not getting that degree so I went back and got it." "Lots of hard work you had lots of sleepless nights." "Yeah in fact I remember fortunately didn't happen that often but I'd take a cold shower not for the reasons that you might think but I'd take a cold shower because it would keep me awake put a pot of coffee on because I knew I was going to be doing an all-nighter." "So Gary just turn it up a notch you know it's up to you to make it happen but you will and it'll all be worth it." "And thanks Gary for sending us your big challenge and we wish you big success." "Big success and if anyone else has a suggestion for Gary share it with us at bigsuccess.com that's also where you'll find a written summary of today's show and before we go let's get our big quote for the day." "Our big quote today comes from Colin Hightower who said "Worry compounds the futility of being trapped on a dead end street thinking opens new avenues." "But that's just the start after you've thought about your escape route put it in gear and burn some rubber getting out of there." "Man that sounds like you tried with Mary Lynn." "Hey what can I say George I'm a woman on the move." "Well you know looking forward to our next show Mary Lynn I'm loving this we just you know had the little car thing now we're going to football what could be better right? Super Bowls coming up Sunday we're going to talk about how to fumble forward toward the end zone." "Touchdown and until next time here's to your big success." "The Big Success Show at B.I.G.G.
