Welcome to our 46th Big Success Show. Today, we'll talk about climbing the stairway to success. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. Stairway to success. I thought you were going to say the stairway to heaven. We almost called it that. Yeah, but we're not big heaven, we're big success. That's right. Stairway to heaven, that reminds me of my DJ days, because the song is so long, about nine minutes long, way back when I worked in overnight shift, I was super hungry. And so I put that song on, and I knew I had time to run down to the fast food joint down the road. So I'm jamming to Zeppelin in the car all the way down and back, but I got back and realized that I'd left my key inside on the console. No, wait, so you were locked down? I'm locked out, right? I can't imagine locking yourself up. Holding my fast food bag. So I'm running around the building, looking for a way to get in without having to call my boss at two in the morning, plus I don't want to have dead air. And so fortunately I found a window that was unlocked, but it was too high to climb into. So then I had to grab the garbage can and turn it upside down so that I could hop into the window. By the time I made it in and back to the DJ booth, there were still two minutes left on the song, right? It's a two minutes to spare. It's amazing you do all that. So I have two minutes left. That is a long song. Well, fortunately, the stairway to success must be shorter than the stairway to heaven, because we're not going to talk about it for nine minutes. All right, well, let's talk about how to reach your goals step by step. Well, to start, just picture a really, really tall building. Like the Sears Tower, the Empire State building. Those are pretty good examples, aren't they? Yeah, I mean, a hundred stories or so, you know, all those are above that. And then picture a stairwell in that building. I realized we'd probably take the elevator, right? But picture a stairwell and just picture it so that you can see all the way to the top of that stairwell. You can see the top of the building. That's a lot of stairs, George. My legs are hurting, just thinking about it. Well, it tells me you've got the picture, Maryland. Now, can you jump all the way to the top of that building? Well, Superman could. He's able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound, but he's fictitious. That's a cartoon in there. So I certainly couldn't. Let me ask you another question. Could you jump up, let's just say one flight of stairs? Michael Jordan couldn't do that. With a running start, even. Yes, well, could you take one step? Yes, that I could handle. Okay, and then once you've taken one, you could take a second one, right? Of course, yeah. Well, your success is like this stairwell in a tall building. You can't jump to it. You have to get there step by step. A hundred story building. That is a long way up. You know, George, what's going to keep me going? Well, that's the pause that refreshes, right? To use a Coca-Cola slogan. But what if, when you reach that next floor, you gave yourself a little treat, something you really wanted? Well, that would definitely make me focus and want to get to that next floor for those little rewards. Well, and that's exactly what you need to do, Maryland. So let's talk about three mistakes that people often make when they set their goals. The first thing is they try to jump to the top of the building. They want that instant success. They want the impossible. And in order to get it, you have to take such a huge risk that most of the time you fall flat on your face. Well, and if you were to ask any successful person, they didn't start at the top. They started at the bottom and worked their way up too. That's exactly right. Second mistake that people often make is they'll climb a stairway in this building and then they climb a stairway in that building. But they never get past the second floor of any building. Running up and down, different stairways, never getting anywhere with any of them. Right and third, they never stop to rest, give themselves that refreshment, that little treat. So eager to get to the top, but they don't reward themselves for their progress. And they never make it to the top because they wear themselves out. And coming up, three tips to help you get to the top of your stairway. First tip is this, find your building and the stairwell that leads to the top. And the building is your dream, your passion, and the stairwell is your action plan. That's right, and all the steps that it will take, you gotta have long-term goals, you gotta have that building, that stairway, because then, second, you can break it down into the medium-term goals. Thinking about that flight of stairs. And the short-term goals. And that's each step. And what happens is this keeps you from focusing on how tall the building is, how many steps you still have to go up. And it keeps you from giving up and going to another building because you have your goals and you have your focus. - And you've got the long-term goals for direction, you've got the medium and short-term goals that help you track the progress towards your long-term goals. And then finally, the third thing is, give yourself a treat with those medium and long-term goals when you reach them, that step, that flight, pause. Give yourself a reward, something you really want. - Like an extra day off or a weekend away or that cool new gadget you've gotta have. - Absolutely. And so you're climbing the stairway to success, which is your big dream. What motivates you, but you also reward yourself for your progress? - You know, our big goal setter's workbook is a great tool to help you on this journey. - That's right, in step two, does exactly that.
