The BIGG Successs Show
Intuition - It's Not Just For Women Anymore
When to use intuition to your advantage...and how a magic 8-ball can help! Listen to the show and hear the summary.
Welcome to our 25th Big Success Show. Today we'll talk about intuition. It's not just for women anymore. The Big Success Show with George and Mary Lynn. Last time, we helped a listener with a difficult situation with a co-worker who was bad-mouting. I think we've given him some great advice and we can do the same for you. If you've got a situation, we can help you out with email us through our website at bigsuccess.com. And now we want to talk about intuition. When can you trust your instincts? You know, and my intuition tells me that guys are going to be uncomfortable with this discussion today. I don't think so, do you? Just tell them me. We've all heard about women's intuition. You know, women are seen as more emotional. We rely on our feelings more, but that doesn't mean that there's no logic to the decisions we make. Well, guys, of course, are seen as more logical. We value being able to argue our point. And in order to do that, we have to prove our point. We have to have the facts. That doesn't mean that guys never use intuition. It does seem that logic is what we value today. Everybody -- what are the facts? Everybody wants to know it. Let's cut to the chase. Makes me think of the super-tramp song, you know? They sent me a way to teach me how to be logical, right? Right. And, you know, the thing is, Mary Lynn, it's -- I think that few people, until they're very successful, will admit that they used intuition to get there. We have to wait until the facts are in. We can prove that we're successful before we can say it was a hunch. Right. Oprah Winfrey talks about intuition and using it. So does Donald Trump. So, guys, guys, guys, don't see using intuition as a bad thing. It does have its place, and it is a helpful tool. I think I'm having a gut feeling right now, Mary Lynn. Pretty sure it's just dinner from last night. I know. In the suggestion. You know, there was a new book out not too long ago by a social psychologist, Gird Gigerinzer. And I hope I'm saying that name, right? But anyway, Dr. Gigerinzer is the social psychologist with the Max Planck Institute in Germany. And he talks about this whole concept of intuition and how people make decisions. And he says there's two kinds of people. There are maximizers. You know, they want to know absolutely everything before they feel comfortable making a decision. And then, satisficers. Satisficers? Isn't that a funny word? See, when I first read that, I thought maybe this was something he created after a three martini lunch. You know, but what he means by that word is, at the point at which you're satisfied, you have enough information to suffice. You can make a decision. Well, and that's a good point, because sometimes the data lies. Well, and it reminds me, you know, this week, in fact, there was an article in Business Week called Beware the Advertising Pretest. And it talks about a survey, and I'll tell you the ad here in just a second, but the survey was done of a consumer panel. And they didn't like the ad. The focus group rejected it. They rejected it. And the people who were behind the campaign said, you know what, this is good stuff. We need to stick with our original plan. They used their intuition. And I think you'd agree with me that the Got Milk campaign was a pretty good one. Oh, yes. And I also agree that the women in that campaign weren't true. Who says they were women? Well, I'm just assuming they're women, because they chose David Beckham to pose shirtless with his little mustache. Okay. Thankfully. Yeah. I think you've learned too much about visualization on the big success show. I see you as David Beckham. Take off your shirt now. So anyway, when should you use intuition, and one shouldn't you? Well, I'll give you three thoughts. One is the more familiar you are with the situation, the more you can use your intuition. Makes sense, right? If you haven't been here before, get more facts. Second, the less it affects your life, the more you can use intuition. So if you're making big decisions, you probably want more research. Some people do the opposite. But that still doesn't mean you have to do gobs and gobs and gobs of research. Well, and the final thing is, the more that it affects you and not others, the more you can rely on your intuition. Yeah, you can be your own scapegoat. Right. Well, I mean, if you're the one who's going to suffer the consequences, then only you care how much research you do, right? That's true. And these situations are not male-female. Yeah, they don't sound like it, do they? No, they're not. They apply to all of us. So next, let's look at a technique that may help you put your intuition to work. When you find yourself needing to make a decision, frame the question so that it requires a yes or no answer. And then, Mary Lynn, you're going to be surprised at this. Get out your magic 8-ball. Yeah. Now, doesn't that sound very scientific? You cannot answer right now. If you don't have a magic 8-ball, flip a coin, you can go online. But the point is, ask the question is yes, no, shake the magic 8-ball and see what the answer is. Now, how does that make you feel? Yeah, what's your gut reaction to the answer? What's your gut reaction? And you're getting, and so that's helping you use your intuition. You can find a written summary of today's show on our blog at BigSuccess.com. Unfortunately, we don't have a magic 8-ball for you, though, but hey, we do what we can. And let's get our big quote for the day. Our quote today comes from... Actually, I'm going to give the quote, then I'll tell you who it's from, because I think that's a better way of doing this one. Okay. The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will. The solution comes to you, and you don't know how or why. And that quote is by Albert Einstein. I knew you were going to say that. Well, someone I think we would all regard as having a fairly high level of intelligence. So don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith. On our next show, we're going to do a follow-up. We've been talking about this for a while now, but about 30 days ago we talked about visualizing the life you want. And there was an exercise we asked you to do every day where you say to yourself, "If neither time nor money were an issue, what would I do with my time and money?" That's right. You're not supposed to put any limitations on this dream. The sky is the limit, and now we're going to take that information to a new level to help you get the life you want. So think about it over the weekend, and until then, here's to your big success. The Big Success Show at B-I-G-G Success.com [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO]
