AP News, I'm Jackie Quinn. The Republican National Convention opens today. There is heightened interest in Donald Trump's choice for vice president, given an assassination attempt this weekend. And now the former president has won a big court victory in Florida. Federal Judge Aileen Cannon has thrown out the classified documents case against Trump. After his lawyers challenged the appointment of special prosecutor Jack Smith, details from our soccer McGonney Cannon, a Trump appointee, agreed. It's a stunning and abrupt end to a prosecution that had been seen from the start as the most perilous of all the legal threats Trump faced. Since the attempted killing of the ex-president, some Republicans have blamed President Biden and demanded prosecutors drop all four criminal cases against Trump, including one in which he's been convicted. During the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, there are many questions about security at the convention in Milwaukee. Mayor Cavalier Johnson says they've gone to great lengths. There's new information about the 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks, who fired shots at a Trump rally. Here's our Julie Walker. High school classmates say Crooks was rejected by the rifle team for being a bad shot. Jason Kohler went to the same school and says Crooks was a loner. In Vermont, the governor seeking an assessment to determine whether last week's flooding that knocked out homes and bridges will qualify to state for a federal disaster declaration. A new study confirms there is a cave on the moon that could be used to shelter future explorers. This is AP News. Actor James Sinking, known for roles on NYPD Blue and Dookie Houser, has died. James Sinking based his performance of SWAT leader Howard Hunter on Hill Street Blues on a drill instructor he had in basic training. He won an Emmy for the role in 1984. Sinking said in a 1991 AP interview for years he'd be recognized in cities where Hill Street Blues was airing in reruns. You can always tell a cabbie looks at you and the mirror and goes, "Hey, Howard." Sinking also was known for playing Dookie Houser's dad on Dookie Houser MD. He also had roles in Star Trek 3, The Search for Spock, Fever Pitch, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. I'm Archie Zaroleda.
