This is AP News. I'm Rita Falle. President Biden and former President Trump are each reacting to Saturday's assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Former President Trump calling for unity and resilience. President Biden is saying, "Yeah, people can disagree with each other, but..." Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It's part of human nature. But politics must never be a little battlefield, and God forbid, a killing field. The AP's Sagar Magani, with more on the President's address to the nation last night. You know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. And it's time to cool it down. As officials warned of violence in the lead up to November, the President said political passions can run high, but... It was the third time the President publicly addressed Saturday's attack. This address in the Oval Office came roughly an hour after Trump arrived in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. That starts today. I have no doubt they'll criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country. And the President says a deeply divided nation must settle its political differences through the ballot box, not bullets. Nothing is more important for us now. And standing together, we can do this. Sagar Magani, Washington. Still unknown, the gunman's motive. He was shot dead by Secret Service agents. Thomas Matthew Crooks was 20 years old. High school classmate Jason Kohler says he was a loner and was bullied. I didn't have any classes with him. My only interactions with him were just seeing him in school. He was bullied, sat alone at lunch. President Biden ordered a security review of the attack, which killed a bystander and critically wounded two others. Former President Trump says a bullet pierced his right ear. His aides say he's doing well and is in great spirits. This is AP News. The second phase of a civil trial against the NRA begins today in New York. The AP's Donna Warder. New York Attorney General Latisha James wants an independent monitor to oversee the NRA. And she wants former NRA CEO Wayne Lappier banned from serving in leadership positions for or collecting funds on behalf of any charitable organization doing business in New York. In February, a jury found that Lappier misspent millions of dollars of NRA money in order to fund an extravagant lifestyle and that he failed to properly manage the NRA's assets, omitted or misrepresented information in the organization's tax filings, and violated whistleblower protections under New York law. A lawyer for the NRA says the request for a court appointed monitor is unwarranted. The second phase of the civil trial will not be heard by a jury, but by a judge. I'm Donna Warder. And I'm Rita Foley, AP News. An official message from Medicare. A new law is helping me save more money on prescription drug costs. You may be able to save too.
