This is AP News. I'm Rita Falle. Former President Trump is calling for unity after that attempt on his life at his Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday. President Biden is ordering an independent security review of the shooting, which left one bystander dead and two others critically wounded. Donald Trump says the upper part of his right ear was pierced in the shooting. The Secret Service has killed the gunman 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. President Biden spoke to the nation last night. You know, the political recognition this country has gotten very heated. And it's time to cool it down. As officials warned of violence in the lead up to November, the president said political passions can run high, but "I must never descend into violence." It was the third time the president publicly addressed Saturday's attack. This address in the Oval Office came roughly an hour after Trump arrived in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention that starts today. "I've no doubt they'll criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country." And the president says a deeply divided nation must settle its political differences through the ballot box, not bullets. "Nothing is more important for us now than standing together. We can do this." Sagar Amagani, Washington. The gunman's motive? Still a mystery. Kevin Rojek is the FBI's special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh office. "The information that we have indicates that the shooter acted alone and that there are currently no public safety concerns. At present, we have not identified an ideology." There are also questions about how a shooter was able to get on top of a roof so close to where former President Trump was speaking and opened fire. An AP analysis shows the shooter was astonishingly close to the stage where Donald Trump was talking. The AP looked at satellite imagery and photo and videos. This is AP News. Now to Houston. Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he wants to know why CenterPoint is failing the state with hundreds of thousands, especially in the Houston area, still without power a week after Hurricane barrel hit. "Was CenterPoint protecting Texans or was it protecting its own pocketbook?" He's giving the energy company until July 31st to come up with plans so that this doesn't happen in the next hurricane. "If CenterPoint is unable to fix its ongoing problems, at some point in time, either the PUC or the state of Texas will have to reconsider the territorial region that CenterPoint is managing." Abbott also says threatening line cruises unacceptable and slows the process. CenterPoint says they expect to restore 90% of impacted customers by the end of Monday, if not before. I'm Julie Walker.
