THOMAS IAN NICHOLAS!

There are three sure-fire phrases that will make any rock and roll fan wrinkle up his nose: “High School Musical,” “boy band” and “actor-turned-musician.” The last phrase in particular is among the ugliest terms in music journalism, and for good reason. Just look at the recent track record: From Russell Crowe to Lindsey Lohan ... well, let’s just say it hasn’t been a very pretty sight. Thanks to those people and others (We’re looking at you, Kevin Bacon), any actor who wants an honest shot at a career in music has a long, dark road ahead of him. Fortunately for all of us, “actor-turned-musician” Thomas Ian Nicholas has two weapons in his corner. First, he’s been playing music for over half his life and can write a pop song like nobody’s business. And second, that long road we were talking about? Doesn’t bother him one bit. Thom has been, is, and to some degree will always be known as Kevin from the “American Pie” movies. That’s right, he was that nice kid, that wholesome kid ... that kid who got to make out with Tara Reid. Whereas to most young men the idea of living with that identity is not such a bad proposition, Nicholas has the desire, not to mention the talent, to be so much more. Musically, Thom draws from a solid crop of influences – from Switchfoot to Springsteen – that have helped him learn the art of writing a pop song while keeping a foot in rock and roll. His music is polished enough to swagger right onto the radio, but raw enough to sound honest – and, it’s worth mentioning, is much more rock and roll than you’d ever expect from someone who’s had the dubious honor of being tagged Seventeen Magazine’s “It Boy.” For Nicholas, this time in his life isn’t about red carpets. He’s not worried about dating the “right girl” or answering questions about “who he’s wearing” at the Oscars. It’s more about connecting with fans – no, with people – at all costs!

Lee. It's Monday, May 17 2010 It's 10 to 10 p.m. Eastern 730 p.m. Pacific time here on the wonderful United States of America. I guess I can pretty much attest to that right and tonight's show I have the pleasure of sitting down and having a great great chat layback chat with Thomas Ian Nicholas And we saw him in the movie rookie of the year back in the early 90s And he was also an all the American pie films American pie American pie to and American wedding as Kevin Myers Well now he's also going to be joining us to talk about his newest album. That's right home boy is now a musician A bit of a lot of people didn't know that many people probably didn't know that about him But he is he's an actor term musician. He needs going to be talking about His new album that's supposed to drop on June 1st call heroes So we had the chance of sitting down having a nice Oh about 25 minute conversation with him last week, and now I had the pleasure of her standing to you Thomas Ian Nicholas. I will listen Oh Miss the bell how are you? I'm good. Did I say your name right? You did say my name, right? Very cool. That's good. I I'm glad that we pushed it to 630 because I'm still 10 minutes late And I'm still available, but here I am still ready to go with this Look, I'm just glad you were able to make it. That's all I'm worried about. Yeah Yeah, I know I literally just got out of my TV interview, and I looked at the time and I was like, oh shit I'm 10 minutes late. What is the bell number? Well, I must admit though when you did come along you said my name I kind of was taken aback for a little bit of like oh my god He said my name right how did he know that it was a little dull and Well, I was just sitting there going like all right. How did he have you know how to pronounce her name? Who told him how to pronounce my name right? Someone know I just took a shot in the dark And you know I was either gonna be your best friend or make myself sound like an ass How about my best friend who does sound like an ass? Does that work? Yeah, yes that worked. That's me Yeah, both of you Nice You know Let me let me do a little little background check here for for everybody That doesn't know who Thomas E Nicholas is I first saw him hello rookie of the year pictures got a big butt the infamous line that's what we heard Back in the early nine mid mid 90s somewhat mid 90s Also one of the stars in the american pie movies But I don't think a lot of people know that you are Coming up with another another album here on june first. Yes. Yes. Uh, it's called heroes Are humans Uh, I really use my my last album in january of 2008 Um, so yeah the the follow-up album of uh of my my solo music career Now how did you've been have you been writing music for a long time? Is this something that you Brant you know, you know somewhere along the line or uh I've been writing uh music for about uh about 10 or no 14 years damn Um I guess I forgot. Yes since I was 14 So, um, I actually I mean technically I did my first album when uh when I was Uh 17 So this is technically my sixth album. Um, but uh, but I'm only calling it my second Because I'm really proud of this album in the last one. So I just don't count the first four Oh, yeah, there's just um there were just crap The first and the second album right now is that I released and this second element going to come up there to shit The first the other ones they're Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm hearing Yeah, well, you know, I try to stand behind that which I uh unleash to the world via iTunes. So um You know, I uh you can know you can know that I'm not afraid to say when I do something bad If you want I can list all the horrible films that I've been a part of as well The horrible Well, I've done I've done I've done every every I just done their B movies Well, of course they have yeah I'm not afraid to admit that you're part of that crowd here. Yeah, why not why not in a minute? You know, I had to I had to say the that it's very very cool Like the first one and if you were just on the line and you just dropped the s bomb and this is shit That's like right away. I just am I feel like home. I feel like I'm at home. That's great Oh, wait Are we live on the air right now? No, we're taping it and I will hang out later on. So I'm gonna be I'm gonna be that guy who swears on the internet radio Well, who doesn't that's that's basically point in case internet radio who doesn't drop f bomb if they fucking shit All the blue plates on internet radio. Hello. I mean, we're not fcc compliant. So this is good I like it I thought you I thought you would I I thought you would and What let me ask you this too What can people say about your music that isn't basically different than anybody that will probably be listening to out there Whether it be on i2 or on our Ipods or on cd do people still use cd's by the way? Um, I got anything there. I still I still print them, uh and people buy them at shows Uh, I think until we're until we're in a you know in the the technology phase where people can Literally just purchase, you know, I I guess you can on on a on a 3gs iPhone You can purchase an album over a 3g network Um, if someone's sitting at a show they could buy the album on itunes right then and there Um But a lot of people still rip CDs into their computers and then I don't know i'm a big fan of CDs in my car But I also have you know cars that don't have um you know Connections for mp3 players. I'm kind of old school like that Well We grew up in that time frame. We're allowed to be old school. So we will uh, we I still have I still have cassette tape players I think a set our albums on that man You know how much I really wish I had a cassette player You have no idea dude. I mean seriously I would love to have a cassette player because then now just like take me back to the 90s Or I'm just listening to old school and pop and r&b on my Walkman Really, I really wish I had that right now, but I don't have it right now. I just I'm depressed. I'm depressed You should be I don't even know you might have to go on eBay and purchase a cassette player Yes, I will go and yeah, I'm gonna go on eBay and I'm going to go ahead and try to Win the option of getting the cassette player. It's not happen folks. I'm sorry. It is to happen and Can we classify you as saying that you are probably one of those artists that is That's turned from actor to musician that actually does not suck Um, I'm trying to follow in the in the path of Jared Lido. So Hmm That's not easy. He's the only He's the only actor Flash, but he's the only actor turn musician that I think has done it successfully Yeah Because I know we can pretty much made some names that uh actually have no idea how to do it Kevin bacon Lindsey Lowen Uh Oh, uh bless you. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So I have a little tickle my throat there But that's that's a good that's a good following That's a good stepping stone for you to have like material leader because I have to I have to agree with you I I am a leader fan. I am a leader fan. So putting your sir trying to Work your way to be like him, but not like him. That's really good. I like that Well, I mean, I think the difference is I still am well, maybe I guess I don't know According to some press that I've done that has also interviewed him He doesn't like to talk about his acting career at all. I don't have a problem because I'm still doing both You know, I mean I have the album heroes are human that comes out in june as well as please give the new Nicole hollis center movie with uh amanda peat and captain keener and all of our flat so You know we can talk about american pie terra reed please give And my music all in the same breath and you won't hear me yelling about it I Look cool. So I don't have to shy away from that. That's cool. I like that Well, it actually it's all part of my career, you know, that would be like Going to a friend's house and being like, hey, man. Don't talk about that time. You know when I did that other stuff Someone actually just tweeted me just now saying garden hoser roan phover They did. I'm not kidding. My name is Dave redfield. That's what he said to me just now. I was like, oh my god So I had I had I had to give him a shot. I had to get a shout out from from Into you and you to him. So there you go I got to come up with a couple of those names at that time. I think I came up with uh rock and fire And rosin bagger were my my two inventions rosin bagger. Yeah Those are my cart those are my contributions Contributions to the entertainment world and you that seriously do people still Recognize you as that kid is a rookie of the year and actually say because she's got a big butt to your face I got it. I seriously have to know that Um the funny thing about that is for a long time No one put it together like because when I was a kid When I was 12 and the film was successful Um, I thought that I was going to like be 25 and still be known as the you know the roan gardener kid So, you know, I was like, you know, man. I'm going to have a messed up adult life Um, and I'm going to you know be You know screwed up in the head because of it and then I luckily got American pie which I think sort of like tipped the coolness meter for me um And and in that regard No one put it together. So when the when American pie was successful No one realized that it was the same kid who was also Henry roan gardener for like 10 years It's only just now That the film is playing like non-stop. I think there might I think there might be a rookie of the year channel on cable That just plays with 24/7 Because because literally like in the last six months It's been having all the time now it happens all the time when I go to Chicago Because that's the home of the cubs. So people care more about rookie of the year always there more than American pie but Now it's like popping up everywhere like i'm in New York right now Uh on a a few tour dates And you know people are like busted out rookie of the year before they bust out American pie It's really funny and and and now that i'm like 29 and i'm past that 25 agent because I have american pie under my belt It's not i'm not embarrassed by it. You know Absolutely. Absolutely. Why be embarrassed? Just embrace it. It's great. Well, like I said I would have been embarrassed had it not been for american pie I mean you have to admit If we were talking right now and the only success as an actor that I had under my belt was rookie of the year You probably think like That I was a has been I mean, let's admit it Okay. All right case in point. Let's all right Let's go with that Why I don't know what I don't but I don't have that because I have american pie. Thank god You would have been basically the child star that would have basically just turned to Coke and pot and weave that you see on the e true Hollywood stories basically if you did not have american pie Yes american pie saved me from a life of drug use It really did It really I think it gave you from a life of drug use and in guys. I think though I think though that music saved me more Um just in that because music is how I spend the majority of my time You're adapting, you know, it only takes up of when I'm actually working. It's only a few months out of the year There's a lot of downtime, which is Sort of how I started playing music back when I was 14 Um, and so that sort of keeps me sane I think and Did it take to say that the songs that you write And as you come up with they have a specific meaning to each song that you write Like they're like any kind of meeting behind each song that you that you have Well, I definitely write from my own experiences and my own opinions and perspectives. I don't I write from my heart not as you know a character, so Yeah, they all have specific meanings or reasons for the the story that I'm telling based upon my own life experience and my own life perspective Like that, I like that so I can pretty much teach anybody who listens to the songs pretty much Look at your life through your eyes basically and it's probably somebody out there that probably went through the same thing and they'll probably understand it a lot more than Anybody else can so yeah, I mean that's that's the thing about about life is I think that's We all feel I mean we're all different and unique but I think we all experience and feel similar things We just no one talks about it so everyone feels alone and yeah, you know, that's the great part about telling the story is that people Listen to the song or you know and they and they relate to it because they're like wow. I I felt that way or I've experienced that And then they don't feel alone and that's that's just the best part about Songs and music for me. I feel that way when I listen to other artists Art if it takes life that's pretty much how it is No doubt and no doubt and what let Before we wrap up here, of course, we got a All right, let's uh, let's talk about please give here You know, we were talking about that a few minutes ago. What exactly is this movie about and you send a band of people didn't ask that Well, can we second this the way? Well, it's definitely It's the film takes place in New York and it wouldn't work in any other city based upon a lot of the set pieces Um, you've got Catherine Keener and all of her flat that Living in an apartment in New York and they're waiting for their Um, this old lady who's their neighbor to die so they can buy her apartment and expand it which is a very New York thing um and then there's also The the leaves are changing and a lot of people in New York drive up state to see the uh, the fall colors And so the first date for Rebecca hall and my character Uh, I play her love interest as we drive up to see the leaves So it's I mean, it's hard to really, you know, do the film justice. I think the trailer You know has a lot of the the funny heartwarming moments and you know, the film has a lot of layers and You know, it's definitely a Definitely a really really good film and I know that by and large everyone that's seeing it is is enjoying themselves So I definitely I'm proud of that as well Now when is uh, the movies already come out or is going to come out uh, when um I did a teaser release for one week in l.a. In new york Uh last week After we premiered it at the tribeca film festival and then it goes to a wider release in june So i'm not sure what that exactly means, but probably like art house theaters across the country Um, you know, maybe maybe at least all the major markets or You know major cities. Hopefully Right, right Okay, so it's probably it's probably not going to be everywhere yet. It's probably going to expand over time Probably going to hit the like the biggest bigger cities first before it hits everywhere else kind of thing Yeah, I mean, you know, I think when when when you say wide release, you know, we all think of like, you know Ironman which goes in like 3500 streams Please give will probably be in like 500 streams or maybe a thousand streams, you know, yeah Yeah It won't be it won't be competing with ironman. It's a very different Uh, dang it. I don't think anybody could compete with, uh, iron man Sorry, no, no, bro is untouchable now I Well, you know, bro will find you connect. Can they find you online as well? Anyway, yeah, um My website which is thomas nickel is banned or thomasine nickel is calm Um, if you go to the contact page, there are links to all of my social networks. It's not more Yeah, but the the thing is I don't know I find I'm following about 80 people And if people write more than two things I don't know. I I sort of zone them out. I don't want to get zoned out. I want people to pay attention So I try not to like over tweet No offense to your 50th week. Okay, the bell. Okay. I'm not trying to like put you down For your My ass. Yes, you are It's a big world. We can do it our own way. So don't talk about you know, see look you you started this argument You're like, hey, you got to step up your game and I'm like no man. You got more you got more content, you know I do I do and you don't have to stop though. You can keep going. You know, I think you have maybe Look, wait a minute. This is this is how fast about you. You can't talk about me Of course I can. I just did suck up. Yeah Damn it. Damn it. I will never win this conversation on that note. I'm gonna end it now. I'm kidding Uh, it's over. It's over man. You can't put me down for my 52 today. I'm hanging up with you I'll show you not Twitter. I'm gonna be so trebudate is about this whole thing And I'm I'm not gonna tweet for like the next few days and be like, yeah Your reason why I wasn't tweeting is because of Thomas E. Nicholas. That's why because you're gonna pull it out for my A Gandhi Twitterman maneuver A silent war Yeah, Thomas E. Nicholas did this to me. I'm not sweet because of him because he said I tweet too much damn him True you are you're gonna second guess every tweet for at least like three hours I am. I am. I'm like, am I tweeting too much? I'm not tweeting too much. Am I tweeting too much? And then you're probably gonna pop on there and you're gonna go like, yes Only if I haven't already Twitter twice No, no, no It is directed at you. You have to reply to me though That's different. I have an exception to the rule Fair enough not fair enough All right. Now that's your homework assignment after this shows over. Okay.
