BuzzWorthy Radio: Looner!

For Looner, the road has always been a friend. From the profoundly spiritual experiences at The
Red Rocks Amphitheater to sharing the stage with the likes of Ziggy Marley on many national
coast-to-coast tours, Looner imbues their live performances with rhythmic digital loops, ingenious
harmonic backdrops and lustrous vocal overlays.
Many words have been used to describe this multitasking musical-duo. Among them:
“captivating,” “infectious,” “stimulating,” “power-packed” and “refreshing.” To that could easily
be added “an audio-anomaly,” since between but the two of them – by means of state-of-theart
live sampling and a seemingly inexhaustible abundance of raw talent – Looner has adeptly
breached contemporary musical conventions to produce in terms of sheer sound-size their very
own “Wall of Sound.”

This is Zoe from Lunar Hi, Zoe, how are you? Good, how are you? I'm good Do you want to know? 3-1-0, Angel Hello? I've got both of you here Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're in different places We're both here though Zoe, where are you? I'm in Santa Monica, California right now In Santa Monica, California Angel, where are you? I am just outside of Boston right now Oh, all right Wow, you're on this side This is a little late for you, isn't it? Yeah, it's about midnight right now Yeah, but it's good, it's good All right Hey, no skin off my nose If you don't have a problem with it, I don't have a problem No, it's all good, are you kidding? We're musicians, it's part of the gig That's right I gotta know, how did you come up with that name Lunar? Zoe We had our little niece, Alyssa Was visiting with us One day and she was spending the day with us And we were in rehearsal And halfway through rehearsal She started freaking out Because she couldn't find her Tamagasy toy And her But see, her reaction was so extreme That it inspired Angel to, on the spot, do the loop That you hear in the song today I love my Tamagasy I love my Tamagasy Yeah, she did it that one time And we kind of played around with it And of course, we all started playing music And she really loved it, started dancing So she forgot about her toy for a minute But then later we pulled it up in studio Because we kept it, because we thought it was really fun So we brought it up in the studio And then kind of started Thinking about what kind of lyrics to go with it And took it even to a deeper infactuation-type level Where the height of obsession over something or someone Right Kind of crazy, so that's how that happened So it's still that original loop that I made that day that we never touched it Or did anything else to it, we just built a song around it You just built the song around? Yeah, it was catchy, man It was catchy, I watched it And I was just like, it's I don't know how you would describe it It's like techno-pop-beats-rock kind of thing I don't know how you would describe it Yeah, we'll go with that Yeah, I'm fine with that It's whatever it makes you feel Well, however it makes you feel I think Zoe and I both agree It's a fun tune and it's got a lot of energy And so I think the whole thing is kind of based in rock and roll But it's really how you interpret it It's funny because the techno aspects The things that make you feel like it's a techno Actually, you're an angel Like voice Yeah The loop, yeah Like going like Right, 'cause that's it But yeah, we had so much fun making it I mean, we couldn't work on that song And today when we rehearse it, we can't rehearse it without like Big smiles on our faces So it's kind of like, well, that's a good sign We should put this out, we should play this for people Yeah, we should just smile I think the video is hysterical actually If you haven't checked it out, you have to watch it on YouTube everybody I mean, just not just Angel and Zoe But then you get these people on the street [laughter] That was great doing that too We had a really good time doing that Just kind of going and taking the camera You know, the people on the street are singing along in the video When everyone sees the video, the people on the street are just singing along And they're actually not listening to the song We're just kind of, we're just telling them You know, hey, just go, I love my time I gotcha And we were singing along with them And it just matched, it just worked It did Especially that one chick just like rocking out like profusely I mean, good dogs Yeah, that was like a gift I wonder if those people are starting to see it I wonder if anybody's seen it yet Oh, yeah, I don't know Especially those that were in it Yeah, yeah [laughter] Acting like that [laughter] Totally, totally So that was great, though That looked like so much fun, too It was a shame I wasn't there Yeah, kidding You know, we filmed the big house party for it There was going to be a big house party scene And our director, Nicole, she just decided We like all her decisions because the video came out so fun But we had like, we planned like these big house party Full-o-motion scenes, everybody's all sweaty and stuff But I like what we ended up with A little bit more folks Well, the next time you do that in another video I have to be there for that because that's kind of That's definitely my scene right there So the next time you do that, you've got to call me off Oh, yeah, I'll be there If this time we'll be prepared, we'll have plenty of people call this time [laughter] How did you two hook up and form Lunar, by the way? Well, we became boyfriend and girlfriend first And then, um, and we knew... [laughter] We're sorry, right away Yeah, we became boyfriend and girlfriend fast And then we decided to do the music thing not so fast Even though that's what both of us did We were a little bit hesitant to kind of delve into the music thing Because I think, I mean, we didn't really talk about it until afterwards I think we might have been a little bit nervous, but it wasn't going to be very good You know, like, we were really digging the relationships And how that was moving forward, but we were a little nervous You know, what if we didn't have the same beat in our heads Or the same melodies or whatever We didn't like working with each other or whatever Yeah, we were like, "Oh, okay, I don't want to work with each other" [laughter] Right, like, "Oh, you're really cute, but your ideas are lame" Yeah, okay, you know Hey, you like polka? Oh, wow [laughter] Hey, don't do polka though, polka is cool [laughter] Yeah, if Steve Erkel likes polka, anybody can like polka, I guess Alright, I'll go with that one Somebody likes it I mean, somebody likes it It's five o'clock somewhere, I need a drink [laughter] But it's normal, like, if you start off something like that To question that this isn't going to, it probably might not work out Or you're going to have these feelings if it's not going to pan out But until you go ahead and actually do it And you actually see what you come up with Then you find ways to make it work, but at least with you guys It was, like, instantaneous when you guys did it, right? It's funny because we were a lot less fearless with the, you know, the physical part Than with some music With music, we were more careful [laughter] I like that one Our priorities are as musicians, you can see where they are But yeah, it did happen, and then the music, when we started making the music together It was pretty great And in fact, the first music that we started making together was film scores Because I was scoring films at the time, and Angel, those were our first collaborations And in fact, the first movie that we scored together Is where we got the name for our band It was a movie called Teenage Cave Man Directed by a director named Larry Clark And it's this really weird, kind of so bad it's good monster movie That plays us in a Mac In the middle of the night at the time Yeah, yeah And there's a scene in the end where it's like kind of a chase scene And a Tara Subcop is actually the actress in the movie And she's watching her boyfriend played by Andrew Keegan Change into a monster and then get into a fight with another monster And while they're fighting each other, and she's kind of been forgotten in the chase She looks at them and she screams and she goes, "You're a lunar!" And then runs away And when you're working on film, I know a lot of your listeners are familiar with the process And you're kind of dubbing a scene and you have to play it back a million times Yeah, yeah, yeah Music to spit, or when you're overdubbing the sound effects, especially in this case There were all these monster sounds and our music was going in And we were on this big soundstage at Sony Studios And it kept playing like that line right there That "You're a lunar!" played over, I mean, how many times, Angel, like 50, 60 times? Many, many, many times, all I know is every time we played we would lose it And it was just so funny, something about the timing of it Yeah The whole crew would just lose it and then I think it was like a day later And we were still laughing about it, talking about it I was like, you know, that's just a great name for a band, lunar It would be a great name for a band At the time we were calling our project, we were making some music together We were loosely calling our project, or if we were film composers together We were calling ourselves Zoe Angel as like one word It looked like some weird kind of weird word Yeah, yeah Yeah, and then we were, "Hello, lunar!" That's it And then, like the next day we went online and looked up lunar And found out that it also means that a lunar is someone who has a balloon fetish Yeah, it's short for someone, a short of balloon-ers, what they're called You both don't have those kinds of fetishes, do you? The moon fetish is no, I mean to talk about a total random fact to find out afterwards But we figured, you know, it was such a harm, it seems like such a harmless fetish Like balloons, like that's not really cool, that's not scary or violent in any way Oh, it's not at all Yeah, as far as fetishes go, I think it's pretty innocent quirky one So we were like, "Okay, that was like six years ago" And I think the ballooner community, I don't know, I'm sure they're aware of us Because we kind of fight for rankings in the Google search, you know, with our website So I don't know if they like really, I don't think they'd like us so much I think they definitely know who we are Yeah, but there's a little connection, I mean, maybe one of these days we should just go play a convention, I don't know Right, or just have a really big balloon on stage A big balloon, or they have a balloon, we could spell it out, I think It's just one really big one, yeah, lunar and balloons But guy in the flaming lip, he went in a big bubble, you know, over the crowd Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah >> I feel like we need Dr. Drew in this conversation for some of you. >> Yeah, go to a weird place. >> Yeah, you know, that's the first thing that came to mind. And when you were describing that movie, you guys remember, have you ever watched USA's "Up All Night" with Ron DeShere? >> Yes. >> That is where I would find that movie. >> Yes, you would. Actually -- >> More so. >> I don't know. It's still a little -- there's a -- there's like a 25-minute orgy drug scene in the middle of it, but I don't know if it's a fly. >> Yeah, I don't know if you -- are you familiar with Larry Clark's work? [ Laughter ] >> Oh, you didn't tell me that. >> Well, I mean, it's certainly a Larry Clark film, just, you know, kind of throw a monster in it. >> Exactly. Well, it's like in "It's in the Future," and there's monster. >> Right. But, you know, there's a lot of attractive young people. >> Having sex on the party. >> Yeah. [ Laughter ] >> That little kid bit right there. >> Right. Right there. >> There's just the random hot people. And then -- oh, wait, there's monsters. Oh, there's a random hot people over there. >> Right. It's only in the future, like, civilization's gone, but they got plenty of booze and cocaine. >> Exactly. [ Laughter ] >> Because it's now like a shelter. But yeah, there's something really dirty and seedy about it, you know? It's like -- >> Plenty of movie. >> Hey, it was a good gig. It brought us together. We made music together. >> Yeah, and it gave us our name. >> It gave us our name. That's right. Lo and behold. That's crazy as that is. [ Laughter ] I love music acts because one thing I love to ask them is if their songs have any meetings behind them. Do you have that? >> Well, I love my Tamagotsey, obviously, the origins of that song, you know, I described and it came from a really funny, happy, innocent place with our -- then I think she was only 10 years old or an eighth. >> Right. >> But when it came time to, you know, do the rest of the lyrics and, you know, they're tongue in cheek, but there's a lot of truth to them and how somebody can get so obsessed about somebody or something. And I think that -- I think that -- I guess the meaning behind it for me whenever I sing it is I try to connect with the idea that when you are feeling super obsessive about something, for me, a healthy thing to do is to kind of go as far as you can in your mind with it until you can make yourself laugh about it. And then it kind of diffuses the whole situation so you just don't get so wrapped up in your own thing, you know, and makes it easier to find it. If you, like, go all the way there, like, I'm going to walk over red hot coals to be with you and worship you, like, you're my Madonna and, like, just go so far that it's like, oh, right, yeah, you're just a person or you're just my new iPod or whatever it is that I'm totally obsessed about right now. >> Right. And then why? I probably take everything literally, but I'm just -- I'm that obsessive about, like, a sandwich, you know? >> That sounds like me, that's, like, my -- that's my gift for me. If I have a PB&J sandwich, that's all I talk about and -- >> Right. >> -- that's it. That's it. >> We'll wake up in a moment. >> -- that's what I want right now. That's my -- that's my reason for being, really. >> PB&J. >> PB&J. Good stuff. >> You know, we had in New York City just a couple days ago, my sister and I had this muffin cookie thing, like a vegan muffin cookie thing. Usually those things are kind of, like, cardboard-y and not very sweet enough and, you know, all that stuff. >> Yeah. >> This was a PB&J, vegan muffin cookie thing. And it was the right size and it was one of the most delicious things I've ever had. I mean, you know, I'm like you, I think. Peanut butter, I can just eat it all day. >> Yeah, man. >> But this was a really good way to have it. It was baked in, you know what I mean? It was, like, now a new kind of, yeah, taking it to the new level. >> You realize now that I'm going to have to go and get something to eat after this is over? >> I'm sorry about that. >> No, that's the norm. >> That's the norm around here at midnight, a 24-hour McDonald's right around the corner and that's it for me. >> Oh, gosh. Yeah. >> They don't have any PBJ's at McDonald's, though, do they? >> No. >> But they got french fries. >> No. >> But they got french fries. >> Oh, that's true. >> They still have the apple pie? >> They still have the apple pie. >> Yeah, I like the apple pie. >> They just don't bake them fresh anymore, whatever that means. >> Right. >> Right. What's fresh from McDonald's, though? >> I wonder if they-- >> I mean, that's the best walk away, of course. >> That's true. But that's a good point, though. >> Yeah. >> Half of the cholesterol that is consumed in our bodies by that plate, that's bad. >> Yeah, yeah, that's what we did the whole another day. >> Yeah, well, we'll devote a show just to that later on, just talking about intestinal organics. >> Right. >> Well, I like what you said about how, you know, about obsessions and everything. You could basically say that about fans that are, like, obsessed with celebrities kind of thing. >> Absolutely. >> Absolutely. You're going to, like, I mean, I'm sure you see it. I didn't start seeing until I started this show that these fans, God bless them, they're just freaking crazy over their favorite people. I feel like I have to take a hose and just, like, squirt them with it or something, because they're that rabid. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. There's certainly, there's certainly a celebrity obsession, especially in this country. Well, I guess it's pretty worldwide because you go to Europe. >> Oh, it's worldwide, yeah. It's for different things, though. And it happens with, you know, not just people in entertainment, but, well, fourth, I guess, is entertainment, too. And then, like, there's, you know, people in power, you know, people get crazy over, you know, the kings of the queens of the royalty or the dictator or whoever it is, or your teacher, or your mom, or your dog, or your comcochee. But I think that there, you know, I think that there's something to it. There's something to the circle of one of the circles of life that, you know, healthy obsessions with things and healthy looking up to people and, I don't know, I think it's part of it. But, yeah, the crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, but more, we, didn't we all, haven't we all been like that about something, like unabashedly crazy, obsessed about something, like, in the open, not just, like, oh, yeah, yeah, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, like, rest, like, Cindy Loper, when I was a young kid, that was it, I was Cindy Loper, that's just the way it went, you know, I would say my hair orange with the stuff. I mean, that was crazy, it's crazy. Yeah, I think for me, it's always been a sandwich, I'm kind of boring that way. It's never been any more than a sandwich, you had no other obsession. That's it, it's just the attaining of a really good sandwich. You know what, an angel can make a really, really good sandwich of any style, too, because of it, I think he likes, you know, he thinks of these things so deeply and so carefully that when he does craft a sandwich, and it could be, like I said, with any ingredient, it's very special. Angel's very special, and when he's crafting food, he doesn't, he's sick. He doesn't take any, like, samples of the food ball he's making, I don't know how he does this. Oh, I'm the guy, I have to have, like, I have to make myself a meal, or I'll be away as long as it takes to have like, and then he has to set the table and put the fork and the knife on the napkin, and then walk around a little bit to get, like, more excited about it before he can sit down, it's really a ritual, it's really, I got to get the vibe down, you know, I get ready. By the time he sits down, I'm done, I finish. [LAUGHTER] Searching coffee. That's it. Yeah. The thing, though, is when you do that, and if I'm there, the only way that it will make it complete, is if you have the Kool-Aid out on the table, you have to have the Kool-Aid. Yeah, I mean, with none of the pure sugar. Oh, man. Kool-Aid. You have Kool-Aid and, like, five kids with you. But your angel is a Jell-O fan, and that's kind of one of the Kool-Aid. I am a Jell-O fan. It's interesting. I didn't think about that. It's totally -- Jell-O is just, right, frozen Kool-Aid. Dilatinous Kool-Aid. Dilatinous Kool-Aid. I think you have your next single. Dilatinous Kool-Aid? Yes. [LAUGHTER] Done. I think you got one. Yeah. Well, likely the only other thing I get that obsessive about is probably my wife Zoe and our music. But fun, healthy obsessions. My save. [LAUGHTER] I think. There's a little more. I better run in there. [LAUGHTER] No. I love you. You see, you know, we're apart because I'm on the road right now. I'm playing with Ziggy Marley on the -- we're on tour with 311. And part of the tour they have called the Unity Tour. Yeah. And I've been playing for -- percussion for Ziggy for years now. And actually, so I'm here and we're about a fourth week into a six-week tour. So I'll be -- I'll be home soon. And then Lunar will be on the road in September. Yay. Yay. In support of "I Love My Time" I got you. We're going to go six weeks and hit all the lovely towns and cities that have been playing our song and give all the people a big hug and say, "Thank you," and ask everybody to keep playing it. They like it. Yeah. Absolutely. So where can they find you guys online or wherever -- where can they look you up? Well, we're at www.loonertheband.com, and Lunar is spelled with two O's. And I like to say, you know, we're Lunar like the crazy, not like the -- Like, uh-huh. Uh-huh. So we're -- yeah, if you Google Lunar, you know, we're winning the Google search battle at the moment, so we'll be the first thing that comes up and you can click and go right to a website, and that takes you to our MySpace page and YouTube page and you can see videos and watch, you know, if you're all the music and stuff like that. And check on tour dates and all that good stuff. Yeah. And our first show is on August 8th in Venice Beach, right on the beach, right in the middle of the boardwalk of Venice Beach, California. That's the day after my birthday. Just here. Yeah. Cool. Right on. Awesome. Are you in LA? Uh-huh. I won't be back in LA until the end of the month though, so. Oh. Mm-hmm. Well, our first show is on August 8th in Venice Beach, movie festival, and it should be really fun. I think we play it, like, I don't know, 4.30 or 5. I don't know. It's a festival thing, so. Yeah. But it'll be on the earlier side. And then we'll be on the road all September, pretty much all over the country, so beginning is we're on the west coast and the west part of the, you know, top-west part of the country, and then we make our way across, and by the end of the month, we're on the east coast and making our way down south. Yeah. And we'll be, like, in Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, and then we'll be somewhere in places in Texas. We'll be all over the place, talking like 32 cities, so you guys hear of us, come say hi. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. Got to look, we got to look at, especially when you get on the east coast, if you're going to be in Philly, you're like, what, a hop clip and a jump over the bridge for me since I'm in Jersey, so, you know. Oh. Cool. Well, I think we're going to be playing in Jersey too. You're definitely playing Jersey. Yeah. For sure. All right, then. I'll definitely be looking you up then. Cool. Great. Thank you so much, guys, for coming on out and spending the half-hour on this show, man. It's great. Yeah. That's it. Thanks for having us. Absolutely. Come back any time. We'd love to have you back on whenever you want. Thanks. Cool. Thank you. Thank you very much. Take care now. Take care. You too. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. All right, you guys, we are going to be, oops, all right, I've got something caught up on my screen there from a fan, oh, guess what? I got a little pimping out to do for you guys. Next week, it won't be fun to lie to you until I think this week. But next week, we are going to have back on Daniel Goddard and Tom Beards from the Young and the Rest List. All right. I'll show you guys to check out those shows, absolutely. And if you haven't listened to the Starish Radio interview with Jay R. Montinez, I think you should check that out. All right, that is a wonderful, wonderful interview. They addressed everything that was going on online between him and Beth Eller. She made an appearance at the beginning of the show to rectify the situation. So make sure you guys listen to that show. Jay R. Montinez is so down the earth, you cannot believe. He is absolutely fantastic. A wonderful guest. I think you should check it out on Starish Radio. Joanne Cubasek, rocket on. All right, guys.
