We are going to be joined by the lovely, intelligent Keisha Knight Pulliam on the show on this Tuesday, February 10, 2009. It's 5 p.m. Eastern time, 2 p.m. Pacific here. Lock on radio.com. Let's bring all my co-host, Matthew Preston. How are you doing there, Matthew? I'm doing awesome. How are you doing out there? I'm doing very well. Thank you. Excited for today? Heck yeah. You know what? I, whenever I was young, and like I think I was like anywhere between the ages of three to five, I definitely grew up with the cause we show. So I am looking forward to having our, I guess don't, but I also want to say Happy Birthday Dad. It's my dad's birthday, so happy birthday. He's probably not listening. He's in the other room sleeping, but happy birthday. Happy birthday, Matthew's dad. Absolutely. Definitely give the dad the shot out here. So yeah, we're going to talk to her about that, and she was also in the movie. Nadia goes to jail. That's right. Mm-hmm. Definitely got to talk about that too. I'm sorry. I love, I love Tyler Perry. I love his movies, and I love House of Pain, so I'm, I'm, I'm a huge Tyler Perry buff. Love all this stuff. We're definitely going to be chatting about that as well. So yes, yes, I am looking forward to, and also on Thursday, make sure your guys are here at 10 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m. Pacific. Michael Fairman will be on the show, maybe conditioning about everything that's going on on the soap as of late. So we're going to be talking about that as well. We're going to be talking about his article that he just did with Crystal Chappelle and Jessica LaChia on the advocate, which I didn't get to check out, so I'm actually, I actually did get to read snippets here and there, but from what I saw, it's a great interview. I love Crystal and Jessica's personalities and where they, I mean, you, you know that for sure. I mean, you were here when Crystal was on the show, so you know that, uh, how Crystal is behind the scenes and how she is really in person. She's a sweetheart. I think that, and also, I think that she's so good in her character that, yes, before coming onto the show thinking, I wonder if she's going to act like Olivia, and she didn't, and she's so nice because you watch these people for so long and you forget that they are characters, but that's just a testament to how great an actress she really is. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, I didn't really, I didn't know how she's going to act, but I didn't think it was going to be like Olivia, you know what I mean? I am expecting that, but, you know, in the back of my mind, I was kind of like, oh, no, it was, I think one of the, I think one of the callers said the same thing that I just said. So, that's just what a great actress is. And something else, since we're on the subject of CVS soaps, I saw the previews for as the world turns, and wow, tomorrow looks really good. I can't wait to see it. All right, let's get, uh, let's segue off to that one and go into, um, taking our call. I believe it's our guest. Let's bring her on your area code 404. How are you? Hello, how are you? I'm doing very well. Thank you. Is this Kisha? This is she. Yes, it is. How are you? Nice to have you with us. Wonderful. Thanks for having me. But got to start off with the conversation. You are, and I'm being honest, I'm not saying this because you are a guest today. You were my favorite Cosby kid. Thank you. I appreciate it. You were my favorite, you were my favorite Cosby kid on the show. All of us die, her Cosby fans know you were rooting. Yes. They really on the show grew up in front of our eyes as the baby of the family, but you definitely grew out of that phase rather, rather quickly. It's been a long time. It's been a long time. It's been a long time, but you definitely, you definitely grew up in front of us, especially when I know that you got asked it. And when I saw you in the Chinky video, one call away and you wore that, that knife a little CA, I guess. You know, that definitely just said Rudy, who? Yeah, I think it's funny though, because people don't realize, you know, at that point, I think it has been over, like, 10 years since I left the, you know, since the Cosby show had ended. So I think it was about 24 at the time. I did that one call away video, but it was a lot of fun. It was a great song. Yeah, it was. Definitely. And you look great in it. You look fantastic. And thank you. I did not get to see you on Celebrity Fear Factor. That was actually one of the questions that is popping up in our chat room right now. They said that you were great on Celebrity Fear Factor. I did not see it. Yeah, that was a while ago. I actually won. That was a lot of fun to do. How did you get approached to do that? And were you like going, oh my God, am I going to be on Fear Factor? Am I going to eat? Oh, I was excited. It was funny. I actually met, you know, the producers and everyone. I believe it was the NBC's because it was an NBC show, the 75th anniversary that they did. You know, we were there. Of course, the Cosby show was on NBC and that's just kind of how it all came about. And I was telling them I was a fan of the show and they were like, well, we have to have you on. And I was like, let's make it happen. So I was definitely excited to do it. I didn't have to eat any bugs. I was lucky, but I did have to swim in a tank with snakes. Wow. That's scary. Did you enjoy that? No, I'm just really competitive. So I was just like focusing on the end goal, getting it done. So what is your biggest fear? Like what would have been your biggest fear if you could do that show over again? Probably like if they had like put something, made me like something creepy, crawly, like mice or something. Snakes don't really bother me too much. I mean, I wouldn't have, I guess also I never really thought about it. I don't love snakes, but when I was faced with a challenge, I just jumped in and did it. There you go. That's the best way to do it. If you go into something like that, that's like fierce, competitive. You have to just go into it and not worry about, you know, if you're afraid of snakes, if you're afraid of bugs or if you're afraid of whatever it is, you just go in and you're in it to win it. Yeah, you just got to go for it. Get it your best. Now you graduated with a degree in sociology, is that right? Mm-hmm, with a concentration in film, from Spelman College. Nice. So you basically wanted to be an actress to your entire life and it's sociology, something that you got into later on in life, or is it something that you really wanted to do? Actually, I went to college, I knew I wanted to go to college and Spelman didn't have, I knew I wanted to go to Spelman, but they didn't have like a film communications major. So I picked sociology because it's kind of like the study of people and groups and how they interact, and really as a filmmaker and an actress, that's your job is to bring that to life on the screen. So I figured that could definitely benefit, help me, you know, become a better actress, but in addition to that, really my first love is film and, you know, the hole behind the scenes. So I took all of those classes at Clark Atlanta University, which, if you're not familiar with Atlanta, in the Atlanta University Center, which is kind of like a conglomerate of colleges, which would be Spelman, it would be Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and then Will Moore's Brown, but it's not quite here anymore. And unfortunately, I mean, it's really sad, but they've had some like crazy financial issues since I was in school. So you can kind of take classes at any of the other schools and Clark Atlanta actually had an awesome communications program. So I probably took more film classes and I did sociology. I think that is so noble that you actually, as an actress, went for education as well. I think that's so noble. It's pretty cool for that. Thanks. So probably, I got a question for you. I know, I'm sure you actually, you're probably asked this the fall of the time, which caused the family members do you keep up with? Like, who are you so talked to? I probably actually, I just talked to Malcolm last night. Well, we keep in touch and then, Tempest and I keep in touch, who played Vanessa, and actually, Felicia came to the opening, the premiere of Media Goes to Jail. So I was excited about that. Wonderful. Felicia Media goes to jail. You play Candice in the film. Have you seen it? I am going to see it this weekend. Oh, you haven't seen it yet? I haven't seen it yet, so I'm going to. Hey, my job takes precedence sometimes. Okay, okay. I can buy that when I can buy that. But I will get in. It looks really funny. Yeah, well, my character is a lot more serious, but the movie overall, it's hilarious. You know, very much what Tyler has perfected in terms of, you know, doing a movie that has both drama and comedy, and, you know, one moment you're laughing and the next you're crying. So it's kind of like he gets you laughing and then, of course, gives you a message along with it, so. That's right. Speaking of, and I have seen this, you also are in Half a Pain, is that right? Yes. Yes. Which you won an NAACP award for. I did, I did. Congratulations. Thank you. You want to describe that role for us a little bit? Well, I actually play Mo of Randa, and she is Calvin, the son of the pain wife. We actually got married at the beginning of this season that just passed, and, you know, she's very much kind of a headstrong, got her stuff together, take charge type of girl. But, you know, she really loves Calvin, and this next, this whole season kind of about, you know, that whole newlywed phase, when you go from everything, you know, being peachy, and then you move in, and you realize that they snore, and that they leave their stuff all around, and, you know, all that kind of stuff. But it's, I think she's a, she's a, she's a great character, and she's fun to play. You would probably know this more than anybody else. What is it like to work with Tyler Perry, because he just seems like, he's like, I don't know, like the Ryan C. Christ film, he just does like everything. Well, I mean, wonderful to work with him. He's such an innovator in his field, and, you know, he's taken a sitcom, and he has done it like no one else. You know, we actually do literally like an episode a day when we work, and he has taken a genre, you know, dealing with religion, and God, and all that kind of stuff, with a lot of people in the industry. Kind of stray away from, and has brought it to the forefront. But he does it in a way that's still entertaining, and still gets a message across, and as a whole family can sit down and watch. Because there aren't a lot of shows today that, you know, everyone from the baby of the family to grandma can sit down, watch, and enjoy together. That's really true. Absolutely. Now, we actually have a couple of collars on the line. If you want to take some fan questions, are you up for that? Okay. That's cool. All right. Let's bring on this first one caller from Pennsylvania. You're on the line. How are you? Oh, my God. Oh, I'm good. How are you, though? How are you? Hi. Hi, Keisha. Hi. You have to believe I'm speaking to Keisha in that poem. Oh, my goodness. I first of all, I just have to say, I watched you every Thursday night, eight o'clock p.m. on the cards you show. Thank you. And you were also my favorite concert. Thank you. I was about, I guess I was about four or five, six when the show started or whatever. Yeah, I just, I loved Rudy. I loved Rudy. Thank you. We were about same age. Yeah. And the show ended. I followed you. You know, you did Pollyanna and you did those movies and, yeah, I just always loved you. Just so you know. Thank you. I appreciate it. You're welcome. Oh, my God. I can't think of a question I have for you. Well, I guess everybody's asked you this one too. What was it like, you know, working with Phil Cosby and do you still, you know, keep in touch with him every now and again too? I haven't spoken to him in a while, but yeah, it was a pleasure working with him. He's such a common genius and just so good at what he does. And that was, you know, the best, you know, first introduction to, you know, actually I've been in the business since I was nine months old. So it wasn't my first job, but just really learning from him and being able to learn that level of professionalism and all of that at such a young age was such a blessing. You know, I always say that I had the best of both worlds because I had a wonderful career at such a young age and I had a great childhood. And a lot of people, you know, don't get that opportunity. So I'm very thankful. Ben, you're still doing it. And that's just really awesome. She's like totally talented. And thank you. You're welcome. Thanks so much, Jeremy, for calling in and asking me a question. It was great to have you here with us. Thanks. Nice to meet you. Have a good day. You too. One of my questions for you is, do you have any favorite moments being able to have a show that you can remember or recall that sticks out in your mind that you just think about? You mean in terms of episodes or in terms of working or... It's just like this favorite moment in your head that sticks out in every time you think of it. It makes you smile and grin or laugh or something. I think definitely, you know, I love some of the episodes that a lot of people love. And you know, like the anniversary shows and those type of special shows were always fun to do. And I remember just like, you know, riding my big wheel around said and, you know, then I had a tricycle and just, you know, it was like my big playground. There you go. Cool. Pretty cool. Let's take this next caller from New York. Actually, New York caller, you're on the line right now. How are you? New York 3.7. Hello. Sometimes they get shy. You know, it happens. Sometimes their phone just doesn't work. So if that happens, you know what, New York caller, if you're listening, just call right back in. We'll try to get you on. The nice thing you props for is that I was reading that Medea goes to jail. Was the number one movie, correct, was the number one movie. And you guys totally stomped on the Jonas Brothers. It's so good for that. Wow. Yeah, I mean, it was very well received and I'm so thankful that so many people came out and supported. Nice. Now I'll be continuing that process this weekend. I didn't see it when I was opposed to, but you know, hey, I will. I definitely will. I believe this next caller is from, correct me if I'm wrong here. Canada, I think, if I got my area because right now, 419. Good evening. How are you? Good. How are you? I'm doing good. Actually, 419 is Toledo, Ohio. Okay. Okay. Yeah, but if you hang for Detroit and go through the bridge, it's about an hour, hour, a couple minutes from the Michigan Canadian borderline. Okay. There you go. All right. I wasn't too far off. No, no, you aren't too far off. But first of all, one to say to Keisha, you did an excellent job on the movie and I commend you for too. You're very welcome. And I did get to see it. I was treated by my family to see the movie and it is hilarious. So I would suggest to anybody that they go see it. Thank you. You're very welcome. That makes me really happy when people enjoy my work because, you know, you put a lot into the different roles of an actress. You really work hard. Right. And I could tell by how you acted in this role that you put a lot of work into it and now that I'm sure Tyler Perry probably brought out some acting out of you like, okay, I never done this before. Wait a minute. No, I mean, I think a lot of people forget that I'm an actress. You know, that's my job to play different roles and to do different things. You know, a lot of the roles are very different from what I've done, but, you know, this is what I've done my whole life. Oh, yeah. And like many others, I've seen you from the Cosby show on up. I'm a big fan of yours and I'm very proud of you. Thank you. You're very welcome. And I had a chance to meet you. This was a while back. This was like around in your Spelman days. I think you had a vacation time or something like that. I don't know if the name Mrs. O'Neill rings a bell. Oh, Cleveland O'Neill? Yeah. Okay. I did a project when I actually produced and started a Christmas movie with him several years back. He was the exact producer of it. Right. I know his mother. Okay. Right. Yeah. Very small world. And her and his mother happens to be one of my fours too. So it was when they invite you and also her son for an event that happened here in Toledo, Ohio. And I had a chance to meet you and I had a chance to introduce you to my niece too. Okay. So I knew then I said she's going to go far. Oh, thank you. You're welcome. And I feel that this role will probably open the other doors you've been praying about too. I hope so. Thank you. Now, tell me something I said hello. I will tell. Okay. All right. You take care. You too. Thanks. Thank you. Thank you. Bye bye. Bye bye. So I do have to know from like one actor to another, what kind of roles are you going for? Like right now, like what is your dream role? Right now, like for me, it's really about just doing a diverse body of work and letting it speak for itself. You know, and that's the joy of being an actor is playing different people. And you know, I really fought to do this role because it was so different. And it was something that people wouldn't expect, no one would ever think of me as. And I was really up for the challenge. So I just want to do it all. Like, I think that's the best thing. I'd love to do some sort of like action film with like an Angelina Jolie. My dream role is to play, you know, Janet Jackson. If she ever does her life story, why I'm still alive and young enough to play her. Like, I just want to do it all. Like, I don't want to be put in any particular category or, or in a box. I just want to take on these challenges and have fun. You still look like her too. I could totally see it. Thanks. Sorry, my dog is barking at me right now. Stop it. They always have dog bark. It's totally normal. It's not a first. We actually, practically all of our guests have dogs. So, you know. Oh, babies. Dogs are babies. It's like one of them. They are. They're my babies. There you go. There you go. I'm going to put you this name. So, if I say it wrong, you can email me later with hate mail. It's from James Snookis from Central Jersey. And she says, "Tell Keisha all her friends from Rutgers Prep are so happy for your success." Oh, that's crazy. That's where I went to elementary school. Okay, I'm sorry. That is funny. Thank you. I would love it if you got in touch with them. I also tell her to tell her parents Denise and James and her brother James. Hello from James's classmates. Jennifer's mother, Jane. Yes. And then, at her fourth grade teachers, Diane, Glace and Chris Cozzell. Oh, that's so crazy. Thank you. It's her girl, baby. This internet is a crazy thing. That is so insane. It's Facebook when you can just do our show. How about that? That is insane. Yeah, I went to elementary through eighth grade. I went to Rutgers Prep. And my younger brother went there as well. He's right under me, but now I have two more brothers in addition to that one brother. So, four of us all together now. Wow. That's unbelievable that someone from that school just contacted me on Facebook and just said, I was like, wow, wow. The connections going on. That's amazing. We have this next caller on the line. Hopefully they'll come in okay. Ms. Computer Lady. Are you with us? Hello, Ms. Computer Lady. Hello, Ms. Computer Lady. That's good, eh? All right. She sent me a message saying that she already talked to us. So, there you go. She fell in line, but there you go. But that's funny. That's too funny. I'm still taking a fact that this actually was from your school. That really is. That's really great. You actually had a question from a chat room and they asked, do you think? No, I don't. No, no, no, no. I don't think anyone would ever want to pay to hear it. I can act like I can sing all day, I must say. Of course. You'd totally sing for like Janice. But, you know, Janice was like, who are you singing? Let me tell you, I can A, lip sync very well. And B, for her, I would learn too. Nice. Did you have any access to inspirations that you look up to? Oh, my goodness. So many. I think I, you know, named so, of course, Angelina Jolie and Janet Jackson and then Angela Bass. I think it's absolutely phenomenal. I think, you know, I really am one of those people who tries to learn something from everyone. And it's really, I think, you know, even Charlie's there on when she took, you know, the role. And I think it was monster with the name of the movie when she just, like, such an inspiration because so often, you know, actresses are used to playing pretty parts. And they're very much kind of reluctant to play those grittier, you know, parts where they're not so glamorous, where you look a hot mess. And I know for me, with Medea goes to jail, it was a very humbling experience because you haven't seen the movie, but I look a hot mess. And -- That's how I thought we did this, I did. Yeah, I look a crazy hot mess. But it was what was needed to totally become candy and to totally immerse myself in the role. And I think that, you know, it's difficult. It's a lot more difficult than people think to play something so different from you and to play something so dark. And it's a big challenge to do it. That's what I'm thinking. That's the best part of doing something about it because it is challenging. It takes you out of that realm that you are used to playing. Rudy, she was like in the beginning. You know, she's like a good girl and all that stuff. You know, that's a good little girl and everything. And now you're playing this part that's so different. It's -- it's -- what's the word I'm trying to think of here? Drawing a blank on it. It's completely awesome. And you are basically -- That's what he's trying to say. That's what he is. I mean, it's a good thing. It's great to play all of them. Like, you know, I was looking for this challenge and I think you can do it all. Like, there's nothing wrong with it. And it's not -- it's okay to play someone so different. And, you know, a little hard work is good for you. I do have to say, whenever, you know, even though I am a dude, I did see beauty shops. It was on -- he had to watch them -- I watched the dummies. And I have to say, I didn't even know that was you. And I was, like, paid them. And I had to go back to, like, the IMDb page. And I was, like -- You know, a couple people didn't realize it was me. But, yeah, that's it. That's how good you work. Good job. Yeah. Yeah. You don't have any specific preference of a genre that you would like to act in. You would like to act in it all. I kind of like it all. I think it -- I'm trying to think of -- like, I really, really want to do some sort of, like, action movie. That is something that I'm really looking for. Well, I'm like, you don't really see a lot of African-American women who -- or just women in general, who play those kind of, like, you know, fighting, action, that whole -- I love it. I would love to do something that required, you know, to be physical and to act as well. You can defend themselves. Yeah. You can do your stuff, you know. Actually, I did my thesis on images of African-American women in black exploitation films. And she was one of the -- my subjects that I studied in a lot of her different films. Very, very close. Let's try this again. This seems that New York Haller can finally get through. It's such a New York Haller. Let's get you through. All right, area code 347. I brought you on the line. Okay, hello. Am I online? Yes, you are. Yes. How's it going? My name's Mo. I just want to say props to you, Kisha. I haven't seen a new movie yet, but I've been a fan of yours since, like, the comedy show days. But I commend you to, you know, like, taking a different role from what people -- Thank you. Yeah, it might expect for me, so I just wanted to say that to me. I appreciate it. Now, you've got to go see the movie. Yeah, definitely -- I definitely want to check it out. You know, I've seen the clips from it. It's all by the bootleg. Oh. I thought it was just telling me they had thought on bootleg. Don't buy the bootleg. That is just wrong. Let me tell you. We've worked so far. And the thing is, people don't understand when you don't support, like, it's a business. And when you don't -- when the numbers don't show for you to support these movies, they're not going to make more like it. Yeah, because, I mean, it's good to see, you know, just more roles being out there for, you know, African Americans. And, like, I said -- That's why you got to go to the movies and not buy the bootleg. You want to see them all on TV and in the films and in the theaters, you need to go see them. There you go. I know we're in a recession going to that night. There you go. I was going to wait for it to come on DVD, but now I might just have to go see it next week, so. Thank you. I hope you enjoy it. Yeah, so I just wanted to say props to you also, too, because it was cool, like, I guess it was like a couple of years back, but we had seen you in a minute. And I remember, because I'm a big rap fan, I have, like, a show online, a rap radio show that I do online as well. But what I was going to say was, we hadn't seen you in a minute, and then when I saw you in a TV video, I was like, wow, Rudy, you know, so it's just good to see you back in the room of things and keep going and keep getting them good roles and, you know, expanding. Thank you. All right. Thank you. All right. Well, the fans are awesome. They really do like you. That's so cool. And I appreciate it. And that's how you do it. That's right. I do what I do. We have time for one more question. It is just from Whole Division Radio. They want to know how you stay focused on your goals and what inspires you. Okay. Let's see. I've always been a very kind of goal-oriented, determined person. That's just kind of my personality. Maybe it's just the areas in me combined with, you know, my upbringing, what have you. But I just -- I guess I've been fortunate enough to know early in life what it is that I want, and I'm willing to put in the work to get it. And I think really what it's about is kind of taking your dream, realizing that nothing is out of reach. Nothing is out of reach. Nothing is out of limits if you're willing to put in the work. And setting small goals for yourself, set the goals, work toward them, and then when you accomplish them, set higher ones and continue to do that and never get complacent. And when I say that, you know, enjoy in relishing and appreciate the blessings. However, always strive to do even better than you were the day before. Try to be better than you are. And make it an internal challenge, not a challenge with any other person. It's about you being your best you. So, I mean, I guess that's, you know, the most -- that's what I try to do every day. I love it. That's great. That's absolutely inspirational. I love that. Thank you so much. And thank you so much for coming on to this show today. It was a pleasure having you, it was a blast having you. And for all of those of you who didn't hear this, even though it was set throughout the entire program, you better go out to the movie like me if you see it in person. Thank you. Don't buy the bootleg. Pay the $10 you see roll and the popcorn. Go to the matinee. Yeah, go to the matinee. It's all good. Just go see it. Support the arches. Go see it. Thank you so much. Thank you guys. It was a great time today. I appreciate y'all having me on. We'd love to have you back all the time. Yeah, I mean, hey, if I ever need to find any long walks of relatives, I don't know. You know, come on. So they'll call in and find me. There you go. And I really wanted to say, I hope in the next couple of years, like next, like maybe 10 years, we see you playing Janet Jackson. I really uncross my fingers on that one. Yes, send up some, because I'm trying to make it happen. Janet, if you hear me, let's talk. She might be listening. You never know. I mean, everybody else is, so hey, thank you for the try.
