A Fishing Industry Leader In Mexico Is Gunned Down After Calling Out The Cartels (7/15/24)

Minerva Pérez Castro, a prominent businesswoman and president of the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture Industries (CANAINPESCA) in Baja California, was tragically murdered in Ensenada on July 8, 2024. Pérez Castro, known for her outspoken stance against illegal fishing and cartel extortion, was shot multiple times by unidentified assailants near her office. Her murder occurred just hours after she publicly condemned illegal fishing practices during an interview.

Pérez Castro's efforts to expose the criminal infiltration in the fishing industry had made her a target. She had received threats prior to her assassination, highlighting the peril faced by those who challenge organized crime. The Baja California State Attorney General has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda condemned the attack and expressed her commitment to ensuring the perpetrators are held accountable. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for increased protection and enforcement against illegal activities in the fishing industry.

In this episode, we're going to spin back down to Mexico, and we're going to get a report on a businesswoman who was complaining about the illegal fisheries, and about how the cartels had made their way into that market. Well, a few hours after her complaints went public, she was gunned down in Ensenada. Once again, showing you just how dangerous things are for people who want to speak out down in Mexico. And this goes along with what we've talked about previously, how the cartels have diversified their income, and how they have made their way into markets like the fishery, they've made their way into markets like limes and tortillas, avocados, and they've also made their way into things like poaching. They're not playing around these cartels, and if there's a way to make money, you better believe that they're not going to leave it on the table, and there's nothing that's off limits when you're talking about these cartels. And remember, while the saccarios for the most part that are running around are, you know, drug-addled crazies, the people that are in charge, they might as well be running fortune 500 companies. They're very smart people. A lot of them are college educated, a lot of them have an idea how business works, and not only an idea, a true grasp of how business works. And that's why you see these cartels so successful, and not only so successful, but so powerful. When you have a criminal organization that can target somebody a few hours after they make a statement like this, somebody who is relatively high profile in the business world, then you know you're dealing with a serious problem. And the problem is only growing down in Baja. Today's article is from CBS News and the headline, "Business woman who complained about cartel extortion and illegal fishing is shot dead in Mexico." And there's no author of this article, so I'm guessing it's staff. A Mexican fisheries industry leader who complained of the drug cartel extortion and illegal fishing was shot to death in northern border state of Baja, California, authorities said Tuesday. Unidentified gunmen killed Minerva Perez, the head of the state's fishing industry chamber, and what state prosecutor Maria Alana Andrade described as a direct assassination attack that riddled the victim with several gunshot wounds. All for speaking out, imagine if you're in your industry and you see something going sideways and there's criminal conduct and you speak out, and then a few hours later you're walking down insert street here in America and somebody guns you down. It seems like it's just out of the realm of possibility, right? Now of course there's crazy shit that happens in America too, but this is part and parcel. Imagine if every critic of, I don't know, a criminal organization, the Gambino say, came out and said something and then they were gunned down? It just wouldn't work, right? But in Mexico, this is how it goes. And these cartels have car blanched to do whatever they want and nobody's going to stop them. Not Amlo, not Claudia Shinebaum, nobody. The only way to stop these cartels is to directly take their source of income right out from under their feet. The problem with that now though, is that they've diversified and they have their fingers in many, many pies. So you're truly dealing with a hydra at this point. You cut off one head and the next head is right there to take up where the last head left off. The killing Monday in the port city of Ensenada came just hours after Perez complained of widespread competition from illegal fishing and make no mistake, there is a lot of Chinese involved in this as well. The Chinese market, they love this kind of shit, poached fish, illegal fish, whatever they can make a buck on. And if you think that the Chinese give a damn about Mexico, you are absolutely insane. Mexico is just another revenue source for them. You know, you have all these yahoos out here talking about colonialism and this, that the other thing. But what they forget to add is financial colonialism. And if anybody is engaging in that, it's the Chinese. Have you taken a look at the Belt and Road Initiative? But in the previous months, Perez had also complained that drug cartels are extorting protection payments from fishing boats, distributors, truck drivers, and even restaurants. Well, yeah, that's all happening. I mean, that's a common bit of knowledge. Everybody knows that. You're going to pay the tax. I don't care if you're out there slinging hot dogs from a cart. You're paying the tax. Whoever controls that plaza is going to come around and they're going to expect that peaceful. And if you don't have it, well, it's going to be a big problem. So this is nothing new when it comes to criminal organizations and not just the cartels. This was the bread and butter for the Italian mafia for a very, very long time. And Raj said we are investigating all of the issues related to whether this was linked to conflicts involving fishing. No, not at all. It was just a random act of violence. This lady had just happened to come out and talk shit about the cartels and what they're up to. And then she got clipped, but we're going to investigate further. This had complained at a news conference that illegally fished seafood goes to the same markets as legal seafood, but without the production costs or the environmental standards that limit net sizes to protect endangered or protected species like sea turtles. You think the cartels care about sea turtles? Have you taken a look at the way they treat people? Have you seen the way they've treated the migrants? Have you seen the way they've treated their rivals? Have you seen the way they've treated their own members? And you think they care about sea turtles, huh? If you think the cartels are going woke and they're going to abide by your environmental standards, well, you have a better chance waiting for China to abide by those very same environmental standards. For example, Perez talked about fishing nets whose mesh isn't the right size, nets with mesh that is too small, or tight may sweep up juveniles or species that aren't the target. Nobody cares if you're talking about the cartels. All of that shit's going to market too. And what are you going to do if you're someone's purchasing this fish? Oh no, we don't want this load. We can't have these fish. Say what now? You can't do what? As a gun gets shoved in your face. Androge said those complaints are part of the investigation into Perez's killing, but at present her earlier charges of cartel extortion are not. Oh, well, why would they be? God forbid Androge here crosses the cartel dollars to donuts that Androge is drawing a paycheck from the cartel. We are very strong on the issues surrounding fishing activities, androge said we do not have any formal complaint about extortion payments. Julio, Bertegu, Sacriston, Mexico's newly elected Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, condemned the killing in a post on social media, echoing Perez complaints about corruption. "We must eradicate illegal fishing in Mexico," he wrote. Baja, California Governor, Marina del Pilar also condemned the assassination in a social media post. "I am committed to working tirelessly so that what happened does not go unpunished," the governor wrote. And it's so crazy to think about this happening in a place like Ensenada, where I spent so much time growing up. Such a great place the people were so awesome, and not only that, they were very welcoming. Me and my friends had just the blast as we backpacked up the coast of Baja for like three weeks. No problems, nobody bothering us, no issues whatsoever, besides getting rolled by the fed a couple of times and getting shaken down for a few bucks, but besides that everything was kosher, everything was awesome, and it's just sad to see that the people of Baja and Mexico in general have to continue to deal with this bullshit because their government refuses to deal with the problem correctly. According to Latin American Summit for Fisheries and Agriculture Sustainability, Perez worked in several companies in the fishing industry, earning her master's degree in administration in 2002. In 2003, she obtained her first commercial permit for "clams" in the Gulf of California, the summit said. Vonda Felba Brown, a senior fellow in the strobe Talbot Center for Security Strategy and Technology of the Brookings Institution, said the case illustrates how unwilling the government has been to address repeated warnings about drug cartel involvement in seafood production and distribution in some parts of Mexico. That's because they're scared, folks. They don't want to get involved because they don't want to get clipped. They don't want to share her fate, that's what it comes down to. Make no mistake about it, the government has been completely indifferent and deft to please from within the industry, from small fishers to large industry actors to seafood processing plants to provide protection against the cartels, Felba Brown said again they can't. The corruption so deep, the problems there's so many that they just can't overcome it. And the security issue is something they're not going to be able to deal with as long as this corruption is running as rampant as it is. And the way that they're diversifying? Remember folks, they're making more money these days from bringing people into the United States than they are from drugs even. So what you have here is a real life golem, right? This is something that's going to be very, very difficult to deal with and the longer that Mexico kicks the can down the road, the stronger they become. One would hope that the horrendous death of Minerva Perez will finally spur the government of Mexico into action, she added. According to the Tijuana newspaper, Zeta Perez publicly complained earlier this year that drug cartels were demanding protection payments for every pound of clams, fish, and other seafood bought or sold along the coast. So who's going to stop that? Nobody. Not the government, what they're going to come in and get shot down with a RPG or something because that's what's going to happen. We've seen it a million times and a million times more. And the government of Mexico, they can deny all they want that these weapons are in the hands of the cartels, but we know the truth. Mexican cartels are strong and coastal areas because they also operate smuggling activities there. And cartels in many parts of Mexico have expanded into kidnapping and extortion to increase their income, demanding money from residents and business owners and threatening to kidnap or kill if they refuse. While this isn't new, this is old, this is bread and butter shit. Any kind of criminal organization, any kind of enterprise, this is something that they're doing 1,000%. Forward, we're prohibited by law, 18-plus terms and conditions apply. An employee at one seafood distribution company in Ensenata, who asked not to be quoted by his name for Fura reprisals, said the extortion demands have long been common knowledge in the industry. Everyone from the smallest fishing firm to the biggest companies or victims of gang extortion, the employee said, "It's not just seafood. Mexican gangs and other illegal actors have also targeted avocado production." President Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador has refused to confront the cartels under his hugs, not bullets policy, which instead seeks to use government handout programs and hopes of gradually reducing the pool of people the drug gangs can recruit from. And that's just not the way to do it. Give people hope. You gotta give people purpose. Better jobs. Factory jobs. Preferably. And those factory jobs should come directly from China. How many times do I gotta say that? To hell with China. China should just be isolated on a world stage by the west. They want to run around with their bullshit. They want to be the big dog in bricks. Well cool, go be the big dog in bricks and sell your shitty items to people who can't afford them. Meanwhile, in the Western Hemisphere over here in America, we should be focused on our allies down in Mexico. We should be focused on helping people in Central America because that helps us in the long run. And one of the best ways to do that is to have these factory jobs that have all left to China. And you make sure that anyone working in those factories down in Mexico or Central America is making the same amount of dough as their partners are in the factories here in America. Then, these people have something to look forward to. They have some hope. They can, you know, get a job at these factories and provide a way out for their families. But as of now, there's no hope and handouts aren't going to do it. How much of a handout can you possibly give somebody enough to live, not enough to thrive? Amlow has insisted the policy is working despite figures released Tuesday showing his administration saw almost as many killings in June, 2673, as in the month before he took office in December of 2018, when the nationwide homicide figures stood at 2726. Last month, Claudia Shinebaum became Mexico's first woman leader in the nation's more than 200 years of independence. So I hope she does a good job, but I have my doubts. I have my doubts. All of these leftists that get in here with this big talk inevitably end up being failures and they all end up being corrupt. And I have no doubt about it when all is said and done, and history is completely written. We're going to hear that Amlow was also corrupt. And I think that's going to be the case because all of the signs are there. We've already heard the rumblings. We've seen the different leaks talking about how he's been in bed with the Cinelloa cartel. So I wouldn't be surprised when all is said and done if we get a complete dump on Amlow and the nonsense he was up to. But one thing's for damn sure folks, okay? Hug's not bullets is a failed strategy and it's doing nobody any favors besides the cartels down in Mexico. All of the information that goes with this episode can be found in the description box.
